James E. "Jim" Gratton, 82 of Pleasant Hill, IL passed away Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield. Jim was born in Pittsfield on January 10, 1930, a son of Arthur and Dorothy Whitaker Gratton. He married Leona Collins on June 9, 1953 in Louisiana, MO and she survives.
Jim had worked as a self employed construction worker, concrete finisher for Harold Cawthon Construction, had worked at Illini Hospital in maintenance, worked for John Batz as farm laborer and Pleasant Hill High School as a custodian.
Jim served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and enjoyed talking of his Army days. He enjoyed watching TV especially westerns.
He is survived by his wife Leona and his children; James Michael (Janie) Gratton of Vandalia, MO; Gary Lynn Gratton of Pleasant Hill; Legena Louise Gratton of Pleasant Hill; Terry Dean (Brandi) Gratton of Pittsfield and Daniel Leo Gratton. Grandchildren surviving are Jeremiah Aston, Faith Capps, Brooke Gratton, Christopher Gratton, and David (Elizabeth) Gratton in addition to one great-great grandson, Tyler Gratton. Also surviving are two brothers, Charles (Zoe) Gratton and David (Gertie) Gratton both of Pittsfield and several nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by two sons, Lyndle Everett and Ricky Gratton in infancy, a grandson, Matthew Gratton, sisters, Ada Forbes, Helen and Doris Gratton and brothers, Roy, Bernard and Manuel Gratton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Bro. Francis and Eva Sheppard officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Crescent Heights Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.
