Edward Merriweather Cason was a solider in the Revolutionary War. Was born in Virginia and came to Tennessee where he settled in Jackson County in 1811. He built the first brick house in the county. The house was a long time landmark on the Gainesboro-Celina road. It stood upon a hill six miles from Gainesboro, "Bald Hurricane" towering above it, and the silvery stream of the Cumberland visible for miles above and below. This house was near the spot where the original log house was built by James Cason. The brick was burned by negro slaves upon the place. Family tradition as Edward Cason paid a man thirty dollars to lay the brick for his house.

Edward Cason built flat boats on which he floated cargoes of corn down the rivers to New Orleans anda then walked back home. After the steamboats were in general usage he ceased to walk. On one trip the Mississippi Riverboat sank and his young negro companion drowned.

Edward lived to be 90 years of age.
