Esther Levine "Our Diamond Lil"

Esther Edith Levine, longtime resident of the Bay Area, passed way on Tuesday, February 19th peacefully with family and friends at her bedside in Sacramento. Esther is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Benson Levine. Esther is survived by her children, Bill Levine (Elena), Martin "Red" Levine, Steve Levine (Denise), Robyn Fugett (Steve), Chuck Levine, and Bruce Levine (Hollie). Esther is also survived by eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren as well as the hundreds of children she helped bring into this world while working as an infertility specialist at Planned Parenthood in Oakland. A special thank you from the family to Chuck Levine for his care of Esther over the last three years. Esther's working life was very fullfilling. Born in New Jersey, she earned her nursing degree at age nineteen. Esther and Ben moved to California in 1955 with their four children and after living in Richmond and Rodeo for a short period of time, settled down in Pinole. Two more of their children were born shortly after. Esther worked as a registered nurse at Richmond Hospital, Brookside Hospital, and for the Contra Costa County Health Department. She returned back to school to achieve her nurse practitioners degree. She then worked for Planned Parenthood as an infertility specialist helping people have children. With six children of her own, Esther had lots of success helping others have babies. Esther had many outside interests, playing bridge, being involved with community theaters including The El Portal Players, Benicia Old Town Theater Group, and The Claypipers in Drytown California. Esther's biggest love was for her marriage to Ben. They were delivered ten days apart by the same doctor and after meeting at a skating rink in New Jersey at ages eventeen, had an incredible fifty-eight year love affair. They took many motor home trips to Baja California where they would give clothing that they had collected from friends to people in the poorer Mexican villages. After retiring, Ben and Esther traveled extensively in their motor homes and took many cruises and trips abroad. Esther's final resting place will be next to her beloved husband Ben, at Rolling Hills Cemetery in Richmond. For the last few years, Esther has had her annual "Happy Party". The family will continue that tradition at a later date to celebrate Esther's life.
