Marie Wilts Bates, 73, a resident of 791 North Liberty Street, Harrisonburg, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 1994, at her residence.

She had not enjoyed good health for the past several months.

A daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Lucy Boyers Wilt, she was born on June 14, 1921, in Harrisonburg, where she lived her entire life and graduated from Harrisonburg High School. She had worked for Stehli Silk Mill, and retired from the Harrisonburg Electric Commission due to her health. Mrs. Bates was a member of Harrisonburg Baptist Church and was a former member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

On April 19, 1969, she married John H. "Buck" Bates, who preceded her in death on Feb. 13,
1982.

Surviving are two nieces, one great-nephew, and two great-great-nieces.

She also leaves two stepdaughters Mrs. Lennie (Thelma) Guthrie of Bridgewater and June Etta Glickman of California; three step-grandchildren, Sandra K. Knicely, Ray A. Guthrie, and Steven Y. Guthrie; and six stepgreat- grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with Rev. Wilmer Hurst officiating.

Burial will follow in the Woodbine Cemetery.

The members of the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:30 until 4:00 prior to the services on Friday.

The desiring to do so may make memorial contributions to the donor's favorite charity.
