Oldest child of Alexander Dempsey and Nancy Patterson, born in Gortmacrane, County Derry, Northern Ireland, near Kilrea.

Before 1900 the entire family immigrated to Canada, settling in as farmers in Augusta, Ontario.

Edward never married and died at age 45, from heart disease.
