Walter H. Odum, 77, of New Port Richey, formerly of Akron, went home to be with the Lord on May 8, 2000.

Walter was a former member of the Summit County Sheriff's Department, ending his career as Chief of Police of Sagamore Hills. He also retired from the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a member of the International Chief of Police Association, and attended Suncoast Baptist Church in Florida.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Doris; his loving children, Harold (Kathy) of Munroe Falls, Dennis (Darlene) of Akron, Ronald (Kelly) of York, S.C., Phyllis (Tim) Sommer of Richfield, and Vickie (Steve) Ruth of Canfield; sisters, Jeanette (Oscar) Harris and Gladys (Rudy) Fulghum, both of Nashville, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 13, 2000, at 11 a.m., at Schermesser Funeral Home, Akron Chapel, 1446 S. Main St., with Rev. Bob Denton officiating. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron 44333.
