Cephas volunteered for army service during the Civil War in Company C, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, March 14, 1864, for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Sailor. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Resaca, Georgia May 14, 1864 and discharged February 13, 1865 on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability.

In the 1880 U.S. Census he is shown living in Ft. Gratiot, St. Clair, Michigan, a widower, residing with Debra A. Elliott, 34 years old, and her son, John Elliott, 10 years old. In the 1900 U.S. Census he is shown living in Santa Cruz, California, head of a household, working in a sawmill. His wife, Mary N. Miller, was born May 1849, and a son, age illegible. He apparently returned to Ohio and died at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Home, now known as the Ohio Veterans' Home and buried in the cemetery there.
