A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul Joseph Keppler, 71, of Orchard Park, a retired Army explosives specialist and a retired locksmith, was offered at 10 a.m. today in St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 5930 S. Abbott Road, Orchard Park. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Armor. Keppler, who was born in Hamburg, died Wednesday (July 24, 2002) in Mercy Hospital after a long illness. He served in the Army from 1949 until his retirement as a master sergeant in 1971. He was involved in explosives and demolition work throughout most of his Army career. He was awarded a Bronze Star in 1951 in Korea and another Bronze Star in 1969 in Vietnam. His decorations included an Army Commendation Medal with a "V" device for valor in 1970 in Vietnam. Keppler was stationed in various bases in the United States, Japan, Austria, Germany and France during his military career. After his retirement from the Army, he returned to Western New York and worked for AAA Safe & Lock in Buffalo from 1972 until 1992. He enjoyed walking his dog, Hunter, and spending time at his cabin in Belfast. His wife, Carol J. Bateman Keppler, died in 1996. Survivors include two sons, Paul H. of Springville and Lawrence G. of Orchard Park; five sisters, Ethel Dornsteder, Anna Wisz, Edna Kasprzak, Monica Courteau and Marie Savage; five brothers, Henry, John, George, James and Peter; and three grandchildren.
