COMBINED FUNERAL RITES AT HOLBROOK TUESDAY MORNING
One Death Occurred in California, Other in Cedar Rapids Hospital.
Double funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Michael's Catholic church, Holbrook, for Mrs. James Hoy, of Merced, Calif., and John Hoy, of Cedar Rapids. The Rev. John Manning read the requiem high mass and the church choir sang the responses with Jack McGillicuddy as soloist.
It had been planned to hold services for Mrs. Hoy on Monday, but due to the late arrival of the train from California, it was decided to hold the joint service on Tuesday.
Mrs. James Hoy
Lottie a. O'Neill, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James O'Neill, was born in Kansas on Sept. 11, 1882, and came to this community at an early age.
She was married to James Hoy at St. Michael's church, Holbrook, on Feb. 16, 1903. The couple lived on a farm east of Williamsburg until 1928, when they moved to Davenport. In 1935 they moved to Merced, Calif., where they have since made their home.
To this union were born eight children, five of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Kathleen VanderHorn and Mrs. Charlotte Scannell of Davenport, Mrs. Helen Clark and Mrs. Louise Sullivan of Merced, Calif., and Sgt. Leo Hoy with the U.S. Army in Japan. One daughter, Myrtle, died at the age of 15, and two sons, Eugene and Edward, died in infancy. She is also survived by her husband and one brother, James O'Neill of Page, Idaho.
Mrs. Hoy had been ill for about a month and her death occurred on Wednesday, October 3, at Mercy Hospital in Merced, Calif., of a heart ailment which had developed during the past month.
Pallbearers who served were Earl O'Neill, Charles O'Neill, William Hoy, Paul Welsh, John Welsh and John Donohoe.
