Hugh Thompson Sloan was the 3rd of three sons of John Curry Sloan and the former Elizabeth Melina Morrow.

During the Civil War, Thompson, as Hugh was known, served in the 1st Regiment South Carolina Infantry, under Lieut. Chaplin; this regiment was known as Orr's Rifles. Thompson rose to the rank of Lieutenant.

On October 24th 1872, Hugh T. Sloan married to Lenora Josephine Sloan, daughter of Archibald and Elizabeth Jane [Stewart] Sloan. Hugh and Nora, as she was known by her family, had four children:
Albert Lowery (1873 – 1948)
Lola May (1885 – 1971)
Paul Neil (1887 – 1898)
Daughter (1888 – 1888)

Hugh Thompson Sloan departed this life on October 9th 1889 in the 40th year of his age.
