Henry was born in Jackson Township, Cambria County, PA, the sixth of the eight children of James and Sarah Duncan. As a young man, Henry relocated to Preston County, WV to work as an engineer. There he married Rebecca Ann Hooton on Dec 9 1862, then returned to Cambria County, PA before their first child, Flora Belle, was born in 1863. They were expecting their second child when Henry died unexpectedly at age 24. His widow later married Henry's youngest brother and together, they raised Henry's daughter. His posthumous son, Henry, Jr, died at age 6 in Rawlesburg, Preston County, WV. Family lore says that the organ downstairs played by itself, just as the child died.
