Longtime County Resident
Eddie L. Abeyta, 83,
a longtime resident of Otero County, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at the New Mexico State Veterans Home in Truth or Consequences.
Eddie was born May 24, 1921, in Tularosa to Diego Antonio and Eva (Wohlgemuth) Abeyta. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he returned to Alamogordo where he was a longtime meat cutter at the New Market and Piggly Wiggly. In 1957 he built Eddie's Bar in Bent and operated it until his retirement in 1992. In the early 1950's, he played on the Alamo Vets, a local semi-professional baseball team. He was also active in the Democratic Party and served as Otero County Probate Judge and County Commissioner. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bent and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Emma A. Abeyta of the family home; a son, Eddie D. Abeyta of Bent; a daughter, Eva L. Abeyta of Alamogordo; four grandchildren, Wendy Abeyta and Audrey Abeyta of Santa Fe, and Michael A. Hiles and Heidi L. Hiles of Alamogordo; one great grandchild, Valentine Hiles of Alamogordo; a sister, Minnie Armijo of Alamogordo; and numerous nieces and nephews including Robert Duran of Albuquerque.
A wake service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Thursday our St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church with the Rosary recited by Dolores Otero.
Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. with Father John Peterson, OFM, as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the Tularosa Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jim Durocher, Cliff McDonald, Severo "Chico" Provencio, Leo Aguilar, Duane Ray, Henry Prelo, Frutoso Marrujo and Henry Herrera, Jr.
Friends may call at the church beginning at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
Services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
