Richard Leo Spencer, always known as Leo, was the oldest son of Richard Henry Spencer, of the Indianola Spencers, and Annie Harriet Reynolds. He married Grace Adalaide Nelson on 7 Nov. 1907. They had seven daughters and two sons, many of them born in small cabins in Indianola.

Leo was primarily a sheep farmer in Indianola and then later Mount Pleasant, and after losing his farm in the great depression, worked as a guard at Geneva Steel near Springville (1935), and later in Provo. He died in Provo in a nursing home in 1970. He was preceded in death by his wife Grace in 1968.
