He was the son of Samuel Fletcher "Sam" and Mary Lee (Wood) Bates and married Mattie Kathleen Simms Summers - 18 Jun 1940 - Franklin Co., Tennessee. His obituary follows:

Mr. Sammie Stone Bates, 39, died Tuesday afternoon in a Memphis hospital. He was fatally injured by a fall while working on a Memphis steam plant.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock today (Thursday) at Higgins Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. D. D. Smothers. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery.

Mr. Bates was the son of Sam F. Bates of Guntersville, Alabama, and the late Mrs. Mary Lee Bates. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He served as engineer in India during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kathleen Sims Bates; a daughter, Miss Sandra Lee Bates of Fayetteville; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Judy Rainey, Fayetteville, and Mrs. Thomas Griggs, Nashville; three daughters, Donald Bates of Guntersville, Alabama, Elmer Bates of Gadsden, Alabama, and John Bates of Boaz, Alabama; four sisters, Mrs. Raymond Scott, Gadsden, Mrs. Herman Hunkerpillar, Guntersville, Mrs. Lawrence Brown, Guntersville, and Mrs. James Edmondson, Birmingham.
