Poet. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she was a lyrical verse writer noted for winning the first Columbia Poetry Prize in 1918, a prize that would later be renamed the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Her first published poem appeared in the St. Louis, Missouri, weekly paper the "Reedy's Mirror" in May 1907 and later that year she published her first book of verse, "Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems". Her third collection of poems, "Rivers to the Sea" was published in 1915 and she won the annual prize of the Poetry Society of America for "Love Songs" in 1917. Her other noted works included "Flame and Shadow" (1920), "Rainbow Gold For Children" (1922), "Dark of the Moon" (1926) and "Stars to the Night" (1930). In frail health with pneumonia, she took her own life with an overdose of barbiturates at age 48 in New York City.
