When I first made this memorial for Carrie Johnson, it was because her husband had a memorial, but she did not . I thought she should be included. Her name, Carrie haunted me for several days after. Finally it came to me that I believe I met Miss Carrie at her husband's funeral that I attended with my father, George Waldrip. Using the date on his inscription, December of 1964, that would make me 18 at that time. I had graduated high school in May and was not employed yet.

I don't remember now just why my mother couldn't attend with my dad, only that I went in her place. The funeral was held in the Johnson's home. A four room house in the country. My dad told me it had originally been an old school house. I am sure he told me the name, but I don't remember it now. I think he said he had gone to school there as a boy. As I remember, we parked in the back and entered though the kitchen door. I remember the table was filled with food. I don't remember who was there that day.

As we walked though the kitchen and into the parlor, I could see the casket on the other side of the room with an elderly gentleman in it. At some point we stopped to speak with Miss Carrie (I think that is what my dad called her). I remember her as a tiny, wrinkled little lady with snow white hair, who looked to be in her 80s. The only thing I remember her saying to my dad was that this would be the first night they would not sleep in the same house together since they were married. That made his death even sadder. As I remember they didn't have any children.

After the service at their home we all followed the hearse to the burial site. The Langston Cemetery sits just a few yards behind the house where my grand parents lived, Joel and Georgia Waldrip. It is the only time I can remember being at a funeral there.

I can't be positive it was her after all these years. The only thing I can be sure about is the lady's name was Carrie and the words she spoke to us.

Anyone knowing anything about her please send me an edit. If you are kin to her you may have the memorial to keep. If you have a picture, even if she is in a group, please post it.

I have found the blood link to Miss Carrie and my family. Her husband William McClure Johnson was the son of Mary(Molly) Langston Johnson, my great grandma, Lucy Langston Dean's sister.
