John Gilmore is written up in Jordan and Hadden's Genealogical and Persona History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania (1912) Vol II on page 466. His parents were Judge Samuel Anderson Gilmore and his wife, Elvira (Plumer) Gilmore. He attended public school and Hills Prep. School in Pottstown, PA and graduated from Lafayette College with an eye to business. He married Mary Beall April 16, 1874. He opened a hardware store in New Castle, PA along with a cousin, Fred Plumer, who purchased the business from John after a few years. He turned his interest to farming where he found success. He formed a partnership with Orville K. Frey, a cousin of his wife.

According to the Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Vol 2, by James Hadden: "He married, April 16, 1874, Mary, born in Uniontown, daughter of Louis D. and Isabella B. (Frey) Beall (see Beall). Children of Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore: 1. Guy B., born September 14, 1876, married Nella Epperson, and resides in Sumpter, South Carolina; children: John A. and Wiliam E. 2. Samuel Anderson, born May 30, 1879, an attorney of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, married Mary G. Taylor."
