Dorothy was married previously, first to Lester. Her maiden name may have been Gideon or her married name. Her second husband was Charles Orion Bristow. She was known to the family as "Grandma Tutu" as she and Charles had met in Hawaii and the name means Grandmother in Hawaiian.

Dorothy Gideon Bristow was born Mary Dorothy Anderson in Grayville, Illinois. She married Alexander Whaley from Pike County, Indiana, in about 1923 in Detroit, Michigan. They moved to California in early 1925 and my father, Francis L. Whaley, was born in April of that year. My grandparents divorced when my Dad was very young and my grandmother married Lester Gideon. Papa Gideon and my grandmother raised my Dad. Papa Gideon died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1958.
