LAFAYETTE, La. - William T. Bethea III, 60, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004.

Born in Dillon, S.C. on May 13, 1944, he was a son of the late Dr. Thad Bethea Jr. and Margaret Smoot Bethea, and was raised in Latta and Dillon, S.C., and Fair Bluff, N.C.

He was active in Boy Scouts of America and received the Eagle Scout Badge. He graduated from the Citadel in Charleston in 1967, where he was a member of the Summerall Guards. Mr. Bethea served honorably in the United States Army and received the Distinguished Flying Cross while in Vietnam in 1968 to 1969. He was a retired Major from the Louisiana Army Air National Guard and was a lifelong avid aviator and enthusiastic sailor.

Mr. Bethea is survived by his wife, Marjory Patton Bethea; 3 children:
Marjory Bethea Haddix, Sgt. 1st Class William T. Bethea IV, and Julie Bethea Signorl; 10 grandchildren; siblings: Julie Bethea Eckert of North Myrtle Beach, Margaret Bethea McHenry of Md., and Andrew D. Bethea II of Little River.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Alford Cemetery,
directed by Kannaday's Funeral Home of Latta, S.C.
