I am a Professional Land Surveyor for the State of California employed by the County of Orange. This personal project was done on my own time and is my contribution to the Civil War Legacy of Orange County, California. In 2006, I used a Leica SR530 RTK Rover Global Positioning System (GPS) unit and conventional land surveying equipment to locate the 790 (current count in 2006) known Civil War Veteran graves (Union and Confederate) in 9 local cemeteries in Orange County. The coordinates are +/- 1.00 feet of each grave location. I've plotted the grave locations of each grave on an aerial photograph and made a listing for each cemetery with the Veteran's name and latitude and longitude coordinates of their grave. A digital photograph of each gravestone was also recorded. This survey also identified 30 unmarked grave locations which were all located. Four graves were marked with Civil War Monuments in 2005 & 2006. A hard copy of my work is located at the Santa Ana Public Library in the History Room. The information has been recorded to a DVD disk and distributed to the 9 local cemeteries and local historical groups. The Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society has my data posted at the following site: . A professional land surveying magazine published an article about my project. The more technical article is at: . I am member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (Generals Sedgwick Granger Camp 17 in Santa Ana) and the Orange County Blue and Gray Project. Photograph of me and the Leica SR530 RTK Rover GPS unit was taken at Santa Ana Cemetery at the Soldiers' Monument in September 2006.
