Pearl J. Gilbert/Wilcoxson, Thompson, Wood
Dear Frank Mcrorie
I have been working with a lady on the Wilcoxson family out of Hart, Oceana Co., MI. We believe
that Philemon D. Gilbert #144326139 and Rosetta Violet Babcock, Mattison #73029535 had another child:
Pearl Jane Gilbert b. 22 Jan. 1896 Hart, Oceana Co., MI. who was given up for adoption
at age 4 years old when her parents separated or
divorced. Adoptive parents were: James W. Wilcoxson and Delila Samuels Wilcoxson.
She married 1/h Rupert Adolph Thompson 25 Dec 1912 Pentwater, Oceana Co., MI. when he died young
she married Lawrence E. Wood #95141138 a much younger man than herself.
They are buried in Mona View Cemetery, Muskegon,
Muskegon Co., MI.
Do any of these names or this story sound familiar? I would appreciate hearing from you.

Rosetta Violet McCoy #73029535
Hi Frank:
I asked Cathy Colon to transfer Rosetta Violet Babcock, Mattison, Gilbert, McCoy, Hernes to me
so I could update biography. then I will turn it back to her. We just found Rosetta Violet Babcock, Mattison second marriage to a Philemon D. Gilbert 27 Feb. 1892 Leavett, Oceana Co., MI. They had a son William Dominic Gilbert b. 26 Aug. 1893 Walkerville, Oceana Co., MI. So Caddie Belle Mattison must be from Lucius and Lettie Best Mattison. I think they lived together for many years before they married 21 May 1906 Kalkaska Co., MI.
Now as for your grandfather Raymond Howard Mattison
all the family documentation has father Lucius and mother Lettie Best Mattison. If his father took him and Caddie then he probably accepted that his mother was Lettie Best? I still think there is a chance that his mother was Rosetta Violet Babcock. Rosetta was my grandmother's 1st cousin.
Have you done your DNA yet? I am in Family Tree and if you did yours we might see a match
through the Babcock side?

RE: Raymond H. Mattison
Hi Frank:
On your grandfather I would call the Reference Librarian at county seat where he died and that is Chippewa County, MI. Tell them you want his obituary from the leading newspaper. Many times they do this for free. Did he leave a Will or Probate? Call Wexford County Court and see if Rose and Lucius divorced in that county and give them all the different spellings. If they didn't divorce there try Mason County places where he worked. I would call Newaygo and Muskingum Co's. There just might be something in the obituary that will give you a lead. This must drive you "nuts". Ha! It would me.
Now, I understand when you say there was a rumor
that Rose took the two girls and Lucius took Raymond and Caddie to live with him.
Do you have any old pictures of Lucius or Rose?
I have my grandmother's photo album and they might be in it but don't know what they look like?
My grandmother Elfa Rose Babcock, Foster, Monks was a "sweet heart" the 1st cousin of Rosetta Violet Babcock. Her parents Henry Truman Babcock was brother of Taylor Babcock and they both lived around Aetna, White Cloud area Newaygo Co., MI. so know my grandmother must have played with Rosetta as a child but didn't keep up the relationship.
On myself, I was born in Flint, MI., my parents after WWII moved to San Bernardino, CA. where I grew up. Dad worked at AC Spark Plug in Office in Flint during WWII and on the Norton Bomb site they made and put in the bomber airplanes.
I live in South-Orange County, CA. Retired from Medical Laboratory field. So many mysteries on my mother's side of family because of multiple marriages and divorces.
Was Lucius B. Mattison a laborer in the lumber industry?

Raymond H. Mattison
Have you tried for Death Certificate and Obituary?
I don't think he and Caddie are Lettie Best's children. More likely Rose Babcock? I just sent off for Rose Babcock's father's Death Certificate-Taylor Babcock my great grandfather's brother. Will
post it on his Find A Grave site when I get it.

RE: Mattison/Mattson/Matson/Babcock
Hi Frank:
Like you I am questioning if Raymond Mattison b. 1893 was Rose's. I think he isn't since I don't find
him on the 1900 Federal Census with Rose Babcock, Mattison, Gilbert. I think Lucius B. Mattison divorced Rose and he married someone very fast and had Raymond Mattison.
I think age wise it is possible that Lucius B. Mattison could have married another woman prior to Rose Babcock.
FYI Rose Babcock was born 1870 not 1872. Cindy Colon hasn't corrected to 1870 on her Memorial Site.
Rose and Lucius Mattison had two daughters. Follow in Find A Grave. Can't remember if I got obituaries on daughters. If they had a brother he would have been mentioned on sister's obituaries or his descendants.
Rose Babcock was one dysfunctional woman in her love life. I can't find her marriage to a Mr. Gilbert a 2nd husband prior to marrying George McCoy and can't find her 4th marriage to Edd Hernes.

Have you looked for divorce records for Lucius B. Mattison aka. "Lute" in Wexford Co., MI.?

"Lute B." Lucius B. Mattison m. Rose Babcock
Hi Frank
For your records I found the 1st marriage of "Lute" Lucius B. Mattison m. Rose Babcock 15 Feb. 1883 Manton, Cadillac Co., MI.
They had two daughters: Ada Leone Matson and Eva Sophia Mattson.
Her memorial in Find A Grave birth year will be change to
born 1870 not 1872 as tombstone states. Hopefully Cathy Colon will get this done in future.

Her name was Rosetta Violet Babcock d/o Z. Taylor Babcock and Clarissa Roxina Dake of Newaygo Co., MI.
They must have divorced. Since she goes on to marry a Mr. Gilbert when and where? Then 3/h George Thomas McCoy 27 Aug. 1902 Copemesh, Manistee Co., MI. She had 7 children with McCoy and is buried in Muskegon, MI under the McCoy surname. Her 4th husband Edd Hernes living 1930 Mecosta, Mecosta Co., MI. and she as Violet Hernes with her father
Taylor Babcock.

Rosetta my grandmother's 1st cousin.

"Lute B." Lucius B. Mattison
I am searching for the children and spouses of children of Z. Taylor Babcock and wife Clarissa Roxina Dake Babcock of Denver Twp., Newaygo Co., MI.
He was brother of my great grandfather Henry Truman Babcock.
See Find A Grave Z. Taylor Babcock #44999949
They had a daughter Rosetta Violet Babcock that had multiple marriages 4 times.
I think her 1st marriage was to "Lute" Mattison-Matson full name from tombstone Lucius B. Mattison buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Manton, Wexford Co., MI.
On 1900 Federal Census George McCoy and Rosetta McCoy living Ludington, Mason Co., MI.
In household is Eva Mattson step-daughter b. 1889 MI. father born Pennsylvania, mother b. Michigan.
I think "Lute" Mattison aka Lucius B. Mattison m.
around 1886 White Cloud, Newaygo Co., MI. or Hesperia, Oceana Co., MI. I haven't found a marriage record because I believe Mattison spelled so many different ways.
I notice Lucius B. Mattison wife Lettie Best had
her mother Minerva Colby Best living in Hesperia,
Newaygo Co., MI. area. I figure L. Mattison working and living in area around 1886.
Rosetta Violet Mattison and Lute-Lucius B. Mattison divorced between 1889-1891 time frame.
Maybe you have some leads for me?
