I grew up in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, the eldest child and only son of Carl F. Bretzke and Mary A. Hoch Bretzke. I attended Marquette University High School and after graduation in 1970 I entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). I was ordained a Catholic priest in 1981 and have taught in Korea, the Philippines, Rome, California, Boston, Milwaukee and currently at John Carroll University in suburban Cleveland. My ancestors include Bretzke, Steffen, Kilp, Henkel (in Wisconsin) and Hoch and Zolnowsky in South Dakota, and Lambert Kniest in Carroll IA
