This is my great, great, great grandfather. I just sent you a picture of the tombstone. It is not too far from the church. One of the older tombstones in the cemetery.

Jeanette Averett
I wanted to let you know that I am currently restoring Sapp Cemetery where the Averett's are supposed to be buried. So far, her stone hasn't been found. There are a number of fieldstones marking graves with no inscriptions, and it's possible one of those is marking her grave.

The restoration will take a couple of years to complete due to the size of the cemetery and the condition of the tombstones. It was completely overgrown with trees, brush, blackberry briars, poison ivy and the like. Cattle had been allowed to roam in the years past. Eventually, most of the tombstones became buried underground and no one knew they were there. You wouldn't have known there was a cemetery fact, most locals didn't know there were burials there.

I have volunteered to do the majority of the tombstone restorations and a friend of mine helps me on his days off work. It's very labor intensive (clearing blackberries, limbs, trees, digging deep holes, moving heavy tombstones and bases, hauling gravel, etc....all back breaking stuff!) Neither one of us is the "lumberjack" type, (we are more like Lucy and Ethel or Laurel and Hardy) so it takes us forever to get anything done. Just keeping the vines and brush from re-growing has been a job! I think we are winning the battle, though. He has also been volunteering to mow the cemetery for the last two years and drives an hour each way to do it. We are only able to work at the cemetery in the spring and fall, so it's taking a long time to complete.

No stones were standing at the cemetery when we starting clearing the briars and brush and we are slowly finding them and carefully digging them out of the ground so we can re-set them and repair them. Keep your fingers crossed! As soon as a new stone is found, I put a photo on findagrave.

I'm sorry to prattle on and on, but I wanted you to know what was going on at the cemetery and why no one has fulfilled your photo request. On a more positive note, we found a tombstone Monday we have unknowingly walked over a million times!! I guess the sun was shining at just the right angle and I noticed an edge sticking a wee bit out of the it's possible we will find those tricky Averett's.

Take care,

You are very welcome! Thank you. William & Jane are the parents of
Ethel Etienne. Etienne is French for Stephen, which you probably
knew already

Lowell Gates
Delanna: I have just posted the photo for the request you made for Lowell Gates at the Wilhelm Portland Memorial Mausoleum. He is buried with Willetta Gates (as you will see by the photo) IF you wish to set up a memorial for Willetta and request a photo for her (or e mail me) I will be more than happy to add this photo to her memorial page. I usually keep the photos for a week before deleting but if that isn't enough time….just let me know:)
