I've been researching my family and families in Eastern and Cave townships in Franklin County, Illinois since 1980. I've been to most all of the cemeteries in these townships and many others in southern Illinois. I enjoy finding and reading headstones as they are a glimpse into past lives.

RE: #169997545

Marie's death information was located in the Omaha Forest Lawn database that used to be available online. The database was removed about a year and a half ago.

Very little information is available for the cremations. Sometimes the database will include a date of cremation and then a code will let you know whether or not the person's remains were interred in Forest Lawn or given to family or friends.

In Marie's case no date was given but the her CREF# 38366 can indicate an approximate year to look for. Due to the number of the cremation I knew to watch for an obituary with a death date in the 1940's.

Next I try to match information with an obituary from this site:

LANGE, Marie; 79; 6 Apr 1949 OWH morn p 26 @ Forest Lawn*

If you look under Marie Lange you will find the location for an obituary for her in the Omaha World Herald on April 6th, 1949. Sometimes this site will include age and spouse along with the the date of the obituary. If the maiden name is included (or a former married name) I know I've hit the jackpot for research on these very difficult cremations.

The next thing I do is use In this case the Omaha directory of 1949 listed a Marie Lange who was the widow of Julius Lange so her information was a fit for the person who was cremated but it is still not enough for me to really build her bio on. Once again I put the tidbit in her bio in hope that I could find more secure data to completely identify her.

I searched for Julius Lange but I couldn't find anything that indicated he passed away in Omaha so I hit another dead end.

If I feel doubt I try to leave some basic notes so that a family member will be able to help me round out the memorial and truly confirm any cremation or burial I do.

Forest Lawn in Omaha was the only crematorium for hundreds of miles for many years. This means that bodies were brought from Iowa, the far reaches of Nebraska, and South Dakota to be cremated here. This is especially true during the 1920's through 1940's. Once again this means it is very tricky to figure out who the deceased is since cremations from outside the Omaha area meant that the person would be going back to where ever they had lived (or whatever they expected to happen to their remains) so no obit would be done here.

Since many cremations are lost to younger generations I try to help in any way I can since I have access to the Forest Lawn database. I am especially happy to turn a memorial over to loved ones. I also delete the duplicates for these cremations as more often than not the deceased has a memorial elsewhere but unbeknownst to their descendants they were actually cremated in Omaha.

I would be very happy to hear if you have any additional information for Marie so we can figure out if she is your relation. Does Marie have an actual grave location?

Lynne, I will send you Weldon's obit if you don't have it. It states his mother was Lydia (Smith) Summers. Is this not so? Thanks, Kaye

James Summers- birthdate
Hello Lynne,

I notice that you have a birthdate of May 19 1803 for James Summers, born in Sumner Co TN. Please share the source for this date. So far I have only found "abt 1803" and would be thrilled to have the complete date.

Paul Summers
Hi Lynne,
I was not the contributor who transferred your grandfather's memorial to you, but I have transferred Paul's memorial to your care. I did not connect him to his parents as I thought you would like to make those links. Have a good weekend.

James Riley "Vernie" Perryman
Hi Lynne,
I have added Vernie to James's name on his memorial. Thanks for bringing that to my attention and thank you for the great headstone picture that you just posted. I also linked him to his parents in Plasters Grove Cemetery.
Thanks again.
