You are correct, Carl is Maude's son, but I cannot unlink them, you will need to contact Carl's memorial holder. Sorry!

That information came from a local cemetery compendium called Overton County Roll call - it says "see Riley J Upton 1880 census" indicating that was his father - when I just check the census it shows a Joseph born within a year or two of the correct time, but it's not definitive so I've removed the reference on JW's memorial.
