RE: Matthew Cushing Monument Found!
Hi Judy: I couldn't believe that such a prominent monument was "missing." The whole lost cemetery is historic and I hope the local HS who has been cataloging it will upload it. Are you a Cushing descendant? Matthew is my 11-12 grandfather. Ted

Matthew Cushing Monument Found!
Just found the monument! Right where it was supposed to be - in the Old Ship Cemetery. For some odd reason this large and old cemetery has not been inventoried and added to findagrave. Maybe some locals can take the challenge.
An old friend who I have not seen in 60 years lives in Hingham and knew the monument well.
I really can't believe that the Hingham cemetery people or the local historical societies that Fred contacted had no clue. That's a big "rock" to hide, especially since the Cushings were so prominent!
Matthew is my 10th or 11th grandfather and I am finishing up my genealogy. Learning lots of interesting things online.
Hope this helps. Ted

I did not place the memorial so I am afraid I can't help.

RE: Matthew Cushing Monument Hingham Cemetery
Thank-you again. I had wondered about that, having read some sources that discussed an "old" section of the cemetery and the possibility of unmarked graves. It doesn't answer the question of the monument but it could explain why they don't show up in their burial records. I asked the cemetery organization about this possibility. We'll see what we get back.

RE: Matthew Cushing Monument Hingham Cemetery
Hello Judy,
I heard back from the Hingham Cemetery organization and they indicated the Cushing family monument is not located in this cemetery. Even more surprising, they indicate that neither Matthew Cushing (1588-1660) nor his wife Nazareth Pitcher Cushing (1586-1681) are buried at Hingham Cemetery. Thought you would be interested to hear this. Not sure where I go with this now.
Regards, Fred

RE: Matthew Cushing Monument Hingham Cemetery
Thanks again for the added information. I found an excerpt from another family's genealogy with a reference to Matthew and his wife Nazareth being buried in "old ship cemetery" in Hingham and an "impressive monument to the family and their history erected over his grave". Sure seems like it must be there somewhere. I sent an email to the Cemetery organization as you suggested, so we'll see what we hear back. Again, thanks!

RE: Matthew Cushing Monument Hingham Cemetery
Thank-you for getting back to me so quickly. The location of the Cushing monument seems to be a mystery at the moment. We have inquired with the historical societies in Hingham, Scituate, and Plymouth areas without much success. I believe we checked with the cemetery itself and didn't get a reply. We'll try again. We'll let you know if we learn where this is. Thanks again!

Matthew and Nazareth Pitcher Cushing
Hello,
Is the Cushing monument you have photographed located within this cemetery (Hingham Cemetery)? We visited a short while back and could not locate it. Also, are there any grave markers for Matthew Cushing and his wife Nazareth Pitcher Cushing? We do not see their names listed in the cemetery plot data and cannot locate their graves here. Thank-you for any info you can share to steer us to the right section of the cemetery. Matthew is my wife's 9th great grandfather.
Regards,
- Fred

Matthew Cushing and Nazareth Pitcher
Thank you for sharing the headstone photo on the page for my 10th great grandparents Matthew and Nazareth Cushing. I was wondering if I could use it in my family tree?
