Bio and Links
Bio Photo Hi! On my mom's side I'm a Gassensmith; on my dad's, a Dudek. Both are from Illinois, where most of my family still lives. I'm interested in genealogy as one of my cousins traced the Gassensmiths/Taylors back to the Revolutionary War. I think Find A Grave is a great way to honor the dead and make sure they won't be forgotten. I love to go to cemeteries and take pictures of the graves, so my hobby finally has a practical use. I also follow the news and find info on people who have died; I'm a natural researcher so I ferret out dates and photos for local and national news stories that catch my eye. I'm always happy to help. Nice to meet you!

RE: Thank you!
Hi there,

Another Sewol update - following Heo Dayoon's identification, two more sets of remains have been recovered. One was found on the 4th floor; their identity is unknown as of now. The other was found on the 3rd floor and is estimated to be Lee Yeongsuk, one of the general public passengers. Both are undergoing DNA testing, but Lee Yeongsuk is practically positively identified already, as the body was wearing her clothing and carrying her ID card.

I hope you are doing well.

More wonderful news
Heo Dayoon's remains were recovered on the 3rd floor on May 16, and positively identified this morning. This leaves us with six missing - two students, one teacher and three general passengers.

Another victim found
Just wanted to let you know that the bone fragment found on the sea floor on May 5th has been identified as belonging to Danwon High School teacher Go Changseok. This is the second victim to be positively identified. The search crew has only been able to recover one bone fragment of his, so the family is likely not going to receive his remains until they are sure they cannot find any more.

RE: Thank you!
As far as the guy who has duplicates of your memorials, my best suggestion is to merge yours with his, because he has all the burial info and photos of the headstones. If that leaves him managing the memorials, you could ask him to transfer them to you, and he'd pretty much have to, as you are family and he is not. I'm pretty sure he is a cemetery volunteer that photographs headstones for data purposes. It is frustrating that he mass-added the names and didn't search the database to see if anyone else had added them.

It might be best to just add the Brazil nightclub fire victims that do have available cemetery info. To my knowledge, Brazil doesn't have the typical funeral homes that the US & Canada do, where you have the funeral home that publishes an obituary. Usually the funeral info is published in an article. I have been able to find several of the Brazil nightclub victims' burial locations through Brazilian news articles. I can send them to you in an email if you like, and you can add the memorials - since this is your project.

RE: Thank you!
Hi there,

Just wanted to let you know that they have found Jo Eunhwa's complete remains, and she will be returned to her family. They have also found the remains of a person in the section designated for the general public (so, one of the three missing who are not affiliated with the school), and they will be sent in for DNA testing. I really hope that by the end of the operation, there will be no more missing victims.

That's amazing that you named your hermit crabs Ansan and Danwon. That shows how much you were affected by this tragedy. I, too, was deeply affected by the Sewol, and I have not had many people say they were as well that I have come into contact with. The timing of the Sewol and where I was in life was just too familiar and relatable. I have never been this affected by a disaster.

I'm glad you like the photos I found, and that I could be of any help.

I really wish FG would add more cities - for years I have had to add cemeteries under other cities because the actual city is not listed. And these aren't just small towns - some major cities are not listed. I can't list the cities in which the Sewol kids are buried, even though they are large cities, because FG has not listed them - so I have just listed the provinces.

RE: Thank you!
Yes, I've seen her last name spelled as 'Huh'. This is an incorrect translation, unfortunately - a lot of the kids' names are butchered in both spelling and pronunciation in American/Western news reports. For example, Jo Eunhwa's last name is often spelled as 'Cho'. Heo became 'Huh' because the 'eo' sound in Korean sounds like a mix between 'ah' and 'uh'. I do speak some Korean so I know how to spell their names (both in the Korean alphabet and in romanized English), as well as pronounce them. I have thought about putting a name pronunciation guide on each of the victims' memorials.

I will be sure to keep you updated on the recovery efforts and DNA results - for some reason, Western media hardly reports on it, so I'm following a bunch of Korean news sites, as well as the Facebook pages of Sewol advocates in Korea. They are the ones that update the fastest.

Your hermit crabs are so cute! I think all animals are capable of having personalities. I have had cats, guinea pigs, fish, hamsters, a rat, a rabbit, a horse, a frog and a dog, and each of them had their own little selves.

I can find the burial info of some of the Brazilian victims - not sure about birthdays, but I will look. Just be careful when adding a bunch of memorials with no burial info - FG has an issue with a lot of 'unknown' burial info memorials and will disable that option if they feel you have too many. I think it's wonderful that you're adding the memorials for these people - most of FG is very American or British-based. We don't see a lot of memorials for people from other countries.

I sent you a few emails with edits for some of your memorials - I also found some photos on Ancestry of some of your relatives. You may have already seen them, but I thought I'd send them anyways.

RE: Thank you!
Breaking news - an almost complete set of human remains was found in the 4th floor girl's bathroom. The remains were found still wearing clothing. Given the location of the body, this is likely one of the female students, Jo Eunhwa or Heo Dayoon. DNA testing will take about a month. This is really incredible news for the families, who were afraid of many remains being lost. The reason this set of remains is practically complete is because the body was pinned behind debris. The search teams were not expecting to find a complete set like this, so this is truly amazing.

I think you can make the plane crash virtual cemetery public - given that plane debris has been recovered, the victims are now missing and presumed deceased. If you feel it is a disrespect to the families, however, it might be best not to publish them. I have only created the Sewol memorials because most have been recovered and there is no hope that the missing have survived - the parents all acknowledge their children have died.

It's no problem! I will try to do some Ancestry work today.

I have added more photos of Seongho and Jihyun if you wanted to see. They were such beautiful children. Some of the photos of Seongho and his mother are incredibly moving.

RE: Thank you!
Thank you so, so much for sponsoring Choi Seongho and Nam Jihyun. That was such a wonderfully kind gesture. You actually picked two kids that have affected me personally - Jihyun for her story, and Seongho because I have seen a video taken by another student during their last hours alive, and Seongho is in that video quite a lot. Both of the kids you sponsored have more photos, which I will be adding to their memorials shortly.

Your sponsorship actually comes at a great time - we received amazing news this evening. Human remains have just been discovered on the 4th floor of the ship. The 4th floor is where the majority of Danwon students and faculty were, so this is likely one of the kids or teachers. This comes after the May 5th discovery of a human bone on the ocean floor at the wreckage site. All the remains have been sent off for DNA testing, which will take about a month. This is such beautiful and hopeful news for the families, but of course, heartbreaking as well. I can't imagine knowing that there's nothing left of your child but bones.

I am so glad to hear I can help with finding your family's burial locations. Hopefully I can find many of them. I really do have a fun time with researching this stuff.

I would love to visit your MH370 memorial! I will do that as soon as possible.

Thank you for your continued flowers, and for thinking of the Sewol victims.

RE: Thank you!
I thought you might like to hear that the search crews have recovered the school uniform of one of the missing victims, Park Yeongin. He was not wearing it when he died, but it's brought hope that the recovery of the missing victims are not far behind, since this is the first time since 2014 that any of the missing's belongings have been found. Jo Eunhwa and Heo Dayoon are thought to be together in a section of the girl's dorm, which was previously unreachable. Nam Hyuncheol and Park Yeongin are also thought to be together in a boy's dorm, potentially with teacher Go Changseok. I sure hope that they are able to find them soon.

It was my honor to sponsor little Francis, what a sweet child. It's no problem helping find Cyril Gassensmith's burial info - I have an Ancestry account and like to help out with FG memorials as much as possible. If you like, I can try and locate the burial locations of your other memorials.

Hope you're doing well,

RE: Thank you!
Hi Carrie,

Yes, I think they were all wonderful kids. I am so glad to hear that someone else has been thinking of them. It seemed like everyone but Korea has forgotten them, but with the raising of the ship, it's brought the enormity of the tragedy back to light. I hope and pray that the missing 9 victims are found. I have a virtual cemetery for them - it's called "Sewol - Missing". Thank you for reading all of the memorials, that is so generous of you. I hope I've been able to memorialize them in the way their families and friends would have wanted. It's easy to look at victims of a catastrophe as just a number - 304 - but once you see them as individuals, it becomes more real, I think.

I hope you're having a wonderful day,
