RE: Grave Markers in the abandoned Lutheran Cemetery in Artesian, SD
Thank you for contacting your friend. When I get up to the area again, I'll look for any that I may have missed the first time. You're correct though, there are two cemeteries almost across the "street" from each other. I found and uploaded them both in 2009. Since then, I see that someone has added graves to the "Lutheran Cemetery" which actually only had 2 headstones, Anna & Gottfried Brandt, which I later transferred to their descendants who moved west. I'll have to double check these as well. When I went the first time, I was doing my best to avoid chiggers and animal holes in the knee high grass. I'd like to get up there when the snow has cleared but the grass hasn't started to grow yet during the spring. It's a very small window of opportunity and weather is often a factor. There may be other cemeteries hidden throughout the area as well. I only found these by accident while looking for another cemetery which I never did find.

RE: Grave Markers in the abandoned Lutheran Cemetery in Artesian, SD
Unfortunately, I will need a bit more information to locate an abandoned cemetery near Artesian. While the town itself is rather small in size, the surrounding areas are also considered Artesian. This border could stretch upwards of 10 miles in all directions. The last time I was up there looking for a cemetery (which i never did find) I stumbled across 2 other abandoned cemeteries just north of artesian. You can see one of them if you look up Norwegian Lutheran Cemetery in Sanborn County, SD. There are more of these cemeteries than people think and they are all overgrown with prairie grass 4 feet tall and often located on private property which you have to trespass on to get to. Also, these old lutheran churches were probably not connected and may even be from different synods. Since your friend has been there once, please ask him for some direction in this. I'll go if I know what I'm looking for. Weather and time of year is also a factor.

Is this cemetery listed in Findagrave or is it marked somehow?

RE: Immel Graves at Forest Cemetery
We retook the photo's and did a stone rub. Will send the new photo's. Looks like Eva is born Aug. 14, 1805 or 1807 and died Apr. 26, 1898. Johann is born Sept 25, 1819 and died Sept 9, 1895.

Hi Gary,

What I can see is 15 Sept 1819 birth
9 Sept 1866 death.
I have to go back out there to the cemetery and I will try to get a better photo of the dates for you. Jean
