Dark hills at evening in the west,
Where sunset hovers like a sound
Of golden horns that sang to rest
Old bones of warriors under ground,
Far now from all the bannered ways
Where flash the legions of the sun,
You fade--as if the last of days
Were fading, and all wars were done.
(The Dark Hills by Edward Arlington Robinson, first published in 1920)
O Memory! thou midway world
‘Twixt earth and paradise,
Where things decayed and loved ones lost
In dreamy shadows rise,
And, freed from all that's earthly vile,
Seem hallowed, pure, and bright,
Like scenes in some enchanted isle,
All bathed in liquid light.
(Verses 2 and 3 from My Childhood's Home I See Again, a poem written by Abraham Lincoln and published in the Quincy [Illinois] Whig by editor Andrew Johnston, 1847)
And am I born to die
To lay this body down
And must my trembling spirit fly
Into a world unknown
(first verse of 47b Idumea from The Sacred Harp hymnal, original text by Charles Wesley)
A tended cemetery is itself a living creature of earth and candles and flowers. But when there are no living to remember the stories and faces and names of a cemetery's dead, a cemetery dies.
(Time's Magpie by Myla Goldberg)
Media vita in morte sumus (Unknown, ca. 750 A.D.)
"Even as are the generations of leaves, such are those also of men. As for the leaves, the wind scattereth some upon the earth, but the forest, as it bourgeons, putteth forth others when the season of spring is come; even so of men one generation springeth up and another passeth away."
Homer [The Iliad, Book VI, 146-149].

Sorry to take so long to get to your request. I am transferring your grandmother to your care. Your grandmother's maiden name appears as Traskelis on her memorial as you suggested and is indicated in her obit. The aka Roubas in her obit refers to the shortening of her last name "also known as" and does not indicate it as her maiden name. Happy Days to you. Caretaker

Of course, you're right! I've removed the photo, and submitted a section location for the other two Irmas so that perhaps someone else won't do what I did. Thanks for catching that! *Janice

|Paul Hoyt||Elmer Schwandt edit|
Thank you for the city/death edit for Elmer. He was my uncle. I remember the Riverby Inn, but I was uncertain if it was within the city limits of Medina at the time of his death. From my memory, it seems like the Riverby was north of the 1955 city limits, on the north side of Rocky River. Also, the phrase "two and a half miles north of here" bothered me - two and a half miles north of where, or "where is here?"? I'm certain that his accident was on the right hand curve south of Remsen Road as you travel south on 42. The emergency people who attended Elmer at the scene of the accident were of the opinion that he was dead before colliding with the truck. His wounds did not bleed.
Thank you for your interest in my dear uncle.
Thank you so much for your information and additions to this Wilkins family plot! Interestingly, the name Wilkins goes back for several generations in Germany as WILKINS before it reverts to the traditional Wilkens for this family.Who knows why. At any rate, yes, please keep the name spelled WILKINS for future family seekers.

Thank you so much for your corrections and the time you took to research the families. I do seem to get into trouble when people move out of the immediate area and I don't look deeply enough into the historical records. Thanks for the great reminder that it's a bad idea to jump to quick conclusions, especially when the evidence is tenuous, at best.

Thank you so much for the photos for Mary's memorial page and the extra photos that you added, too. That was very kind of you. It makes a page very special when someone takes the time to care.
