|George Paul Farris||Thomas of Woodstock: FAG Memorial# 65413577|
It strikes me that you were working with the best of intentions when you posted a photograph of a marker on 13 May 2011 on the memorial for Thomas Plantagenet (supra) identifying it as his tomb. Regretfully, I must share with you that the marble does not mark the resting place of Thomas, nor does the inscription purport that it marks Thomas' grave.
Latin usage was earlier quite common, but not so much in our times. A disadvantage to some of us, but even those who lack a fluent knowledge of Latin we can arrive at an accurate translation the marker by referring to the official "Westminster Abby" site << http://westminster-abbey.org/our-history/people/eleanor-de-bohun >> An accurate translation there reveals that rather than being the grave of Thomas it marks the grave of two of his descendants, Mary Countess of Stafford and her son Henry.
The Latin inscription translates as: "Mary Countess of Stafford, wife of William, Viscount Stafford, descended from the royal stock of Thomas of Woodstock and Eleanor de Bohun, Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and from the barons and earls of Stafford and a daughter and heir of the house of the dukes of Buckingham, lies buried near the ashes of her ancestor. She died on the Ides of January in the 74th year of her age, and of our Redemption 1693."
We are told on the wall nearby is a monument with an inscription which translates as: "This monument was erected by order of the Most Honourable Henry, Earl of Stafford, in memory of his beloved mother, Mary Countess of Stafford, whose body lies buried near this spot in this chapel; so also is deposited here the body of the aforesaid Henry, Earl of Stafford who died 27th day of April, year of Our Lord 1719 in his 72nd year".
The original memorial which marked the remains of Thomas of Woodstock was covered by a brass depicting images of himself, his wife, his father, mother and brothers and sisters with all their coats of arms. Sadly this disappeared some time after 1677, as an engraving of it is included in a book published that year. It has become known as "The Lost Bronze."
While few of us relish being corrected I felt you would prefer, as Paul Harvey used to intone at the end of his show, "... that is the rest of the story! This being the case I recommend you remove the photo you earlier posted, and perhaps replace it with an image of the engraving from 1677.

Someone sent me a note that Johanne Keil Hahn is listed as his spouse when she is his Mother. Can you please correct it. Thanks!

Could you delete your photo of the Garner Cemetery in Council Bluffs that you posted 02/01/09 because the fence and that sign have been removed?

I have added a photo of the Aquilla Tidwell Cemetery to your site. As you will see, it is over grown at this time. When fall/winter clears it out a bit I will revisit the site. There are grave stones visible.

Because there is a Hammer as well in there. They do not put personal names on these niches. We tried to get into it today even. Two of the bolts are locked up. That is the niche they are in.
