Please, feel free to ask me to transfer a family memorial over to you. When I do a photo request, I tend to take additional photos of gravestones in the area (just in case). Then I'll create a memorial where needed and try to find as much info as I can.

Hello Carrie,
I have been collecting civil war era poetry for a number of years and have recently run across a copy of a poem dedicated to Herbert Milton Nash MD. While searching for other information on him I ran across your find-a-grave page:

I thought it might be fitting to add the poem to your memorial page and have enclosed it below. There should be no copyright problems since the poem was published in 1904 and, to the best of my knowledge, it should be in the public domain.

Take care,
Rick Hearn

The Beloved Physician
(from "Confederate Memorial Verses," by Beverley Dandridge Tucker, published by The Pickett-Buchanan Chapter, United Daughters Of The Confederacy, Norfolk, Virginia, 1904)

by Beverley Dandridge Tucker (1846-1930)

A century's half of honest toil,
The record lies where all may read,
The years so free from stain or soil
So rich in noble work and deed.

A century's half not spent for gain,
But spent in ministries to man,
Who heals the sick, who soothes the pain,
Succeeds to work which Christ began.

No greener laurels grace the brow
Of soldier, hero, prince or bard
Than those with which we crown him now,
Who deemed no path of duty hard.

No fear of pestilence deterred,
No dread of sword, of shell or ball,
He simply went where'er was heard
Of human need and woe the call.

The crescent years look down to-day,
On many valiant deeds of love,
"Well done! O, kindly heart," we say,
"Well done!" the Christ will say above.

-Fiftieth Anniversary of the practice of Dr. Herbert M. Nash, Surgeon, P. B. C. C. V. (Pickett-Buchanan Camp of Confederate Veterans of Norfolk)

RE: Cedar Grove Cemetery

You're very welcome. I couldn't find anything on Mary Anderton because the on-line burial registry ( didn't have her plot number posted.

If you'll notice, in some of the pictures that I posted of the plots there are unmarked brick outlines of graves. There were no markers with names, however, so I couldn't tell who they were.

I have seen that a few people had purchased new markers at Cedar Grove and Portlock Cemetery in Portsmouth. Some of the sections there are totally unmarked and many of the remaining markers are so badly worn as to be illegible.
