Bio and Links
Bio Photo I am married and have two kids. I graduated from Mount Lebanon (Pa.) High School and West Virginia University. My first job out of college was sports editor of the Martinsburg (W.Va.) Evening Journal, in the heart of Civil War country. I now work for ESPN in Connecticut.
I am an avid Civil War buff and author of a blog on the Civil War. Oddly, it's called John Banks' Civil War blog.

Erastus Kinsel in Antis Cemetery, Blair County, PA
I was just out photographing today, and it looks as though Erastus' original marker has been replaced. It's a shame that the old one wasn't left in place, but I think that somewhere in the VA Regs, a new one can only be executed if the old one if no longer legible. At any rate, whoever was responsible ordered a modern flat marker rather than a CW-era reproduction.

Thank you for providing the link -- I was very interested to read the information you've gathered about him and glad the pictures were helpful. All the best to you as you gather these stories.

RE: thanks very much
Glad I could help...Interesting to read the back-story. As noted in the caption of one of the photos, there is a plot map that shows the plot to be owned by Augusta Meyer. There are some other burials there having the last name Schnelbach and Heilbron. For the two of the three that had memorials on Find-a-Grave, I added photos for them too.

Hi, I have volunteered for your request of Sgt. Russ. Part of what I do is to place some facts with the name. the ultimate goal is a face. In this case I found one. But I possibly may have found a second individual with the same name. Which the VA and pension records indicate possible Spanish American War service. Also a online search of New York Death Records 1862-1948. Has a Edman L. Russ, DOD 10301928, Place of Death, Kings (Brooklyn) New York, Death Certificate Number 21817, Age 55, Birth About 1873. Maybe you have some information that might help fill in the missing pieces. The one good note. If they are all the same individual. His military career record consists of being wounded at Antietam, September 17th 1862. During the civil war. His service during the SAW, places him on the right wing during the assault on San Juan Hill, July 1st 1898. Chuck

RE: Antietam Burnside Mann
Hi John, I checked my cemetery photos and the photos of Antietam's stone are fair. I have three and can send them to you for you to evaluate. I also have photos of Peter's eldest son John who served in Company I, 22nd Connecticut Infantry also during the Civil War. Do you already have his information? His stone is badly worn but legible and I would be happy to send you those photos also. You can contact me directly at John is my great grandfather and Peter my gggrandfather. Antietam is my gg aunt.
