Bio and Links
Bio Photo Stories of my Illinois ancestors were shared with me by my great grandmother Grace Ellen Smith Scanlon at an early age and this sparked a deep interest in genealogy and learning more about my heritage. After many years of library and Internet research I decided to visit the areas where my Smith, Rowland, and Wilkerson ancestors once lived. I've now made several trips to Illinois, and over the course of these visits have developed an interest in documenting cemeteries. My main focus is on abandoned family farm and small community cemeteries that are difficult to locate and are in the greatest need of being recorded. Although it has been a few years since I have visited these places in person, I continue to research at home and help fellow researchers on the Historical Society of Montgomery County, Illinois website.

My experiences visiting and documenting abandoned cemeteries in Illinois ultimately led me to return to school and earn a master's degree in archaeology. As part of my master's thesis I researched how the victims of the St. Francis Dam disaster have been memorialized. I am thankful for my many fellow find-a-gravers across the U.S.A. who helped me locate and photograph the grave of each flood victim so they are not forgotten. This research continues. Join our discussions in the FB group "St. Francis Dam Archaeology".

I do my best to provide complete and accurate information in all my postings. Corrections are encouraged! I will gladly transfer memorials to family and I am happy share my photographs, but please give proper credit: "Ann Stoddard, Find A Grave #46964942". If I have offended anyone by adding their loved ones to the site please let me know and I will promptly remove the memorial.

St Francis Dam disaster
My father was a reporter who covered the disaster, and he wrote a pamphlet about it. I did a few pages on it in my book "He Usually Lived With a Female." Have you read it? You can get it at https://www.amazon.com/Usually-Lived-Female-California-Newspaperman/dp/0963483013/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486410525&sr=8-1&keywords=He+usually+lived+with+a+female .

In friendship,

George Garrigues

Bones marker
Hello.

I believe I have the identification for the "Bones" marker which you so kindly posted here.

According to the L.A. Times, pioneer resident Thomas Bones was buried at Rosedale on April 13, 1929. His life story was told in J.M. Guinn's "Historical and Biographical Record of Southern California."

The obituary is at LAT for the date above.

Sarah Hollowell
Hi, thanks for the correction. Are you connected to the Hollowell family yourself? I was wondering how you got the original information and if you have any information on Sally's husband, Clarence and his father, Andrew (Andy.) I have been looking for Andy's history and can't find anything.
Cheers!
Liz

You're welcome. I chanced upon the graves of W. H. Nordholt and also C. A. Aockerblum while searching for someone else's grave, but I'm happy to add the photos. Chris.

Hi Ann,

I am guessing you transcribed parts of this cemetery? Nice job as I know how hard that can be. I have added many headstone photos to those you created w/o one. James

Ann,
I think this Bessie Roberts was alive in the 1900 Census. If you have access to FamilySearch.org Family Tree look up Bessie Roberts L5BZ-GVB and use the links to Sources doing the cross referencing and see what you think. Or you can check the Census directly looking for Bessie Roberts born 1878 living in Montgomery, IL with siblings. Why they are separated from their parents in the FamilySearch.org 1900 Census data base is undetermined. What happened to her after that is also undetermined. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
