Bio and Links
Bio Photo Born March 10, 1940 in Hogansville, Troup County, Georgia to Herman Hanson Mattingly and Mary Lee Oma Crowe and the second eldest of seven children to Herman and six to Mary.

My primary genealogical interests include Mattingly and Crow/e and connecting lines. I am descended from Cezar Mattingly but research all of the Mattingly name. From the Crow side, I am descended from James Crow (1713) and his second wife, Grace Denson.

If you see a memorial created by me and the individual concerned is of your immediate line, but not of mine, I am happy to transfer that memorial to you in accordance with Findagrave rules. If you are interested in a memorial outside Findagrave limitations and you have significant information that will improve the memorial, please us the "EDIT KEY" and I will make those changes.

Thanks to all who have contributed to these memorials especially the corrections as accuracy is important.

Joseph Nickolas Mattingly
Joseph Nickolas Mattingly and his wife, Mary Ann Cecil, were incorrectly portrayed in Descendants of Joseph Mattingly & Hessina Hinton, a book published in 1978 by Joseph F. Mattingly and Eliza Mattingly Kelly. The information in the book have been replicated multiple times in various venues. The authors conducted interviews for the book with “cousins” of Nickolas, more than 100 years after the events, assuming the information was correct.

Private Nicholas Mattingly was a Union solider. He enlisted on 1 October 1861 at Lebanon, Kentucky into Capt. Tweddle's Company, 10th Regiment Kentucky Volunteers, which became Company K, 10th Regiment Kentucky Infantry. He mustered in at Camp Crittenden in Marion County, Kentucky, on 21 November 1861. He was transferred, by order of General Thomas, Division Commander, to Company F, 10th Regiment Kentucky Infantry on 1 February 1862

Nickolas did not die at the Battle of Perryville on 8 October 1862. He was present that day; however, he was assigned to Company F, 10th Kentucky Infantry, a Union regiment.

Nickolas was captured during the battle at Chickamauga, Georgia, on 20 September 1863 while serving with his unit, Company F, 10th Kentucky Infantry. His service record states, after his capture he was in prison at Richmond, Virginia. Statements filed in Mary A. (Cecil) Mattingly widow's pension record (application number: 107012; Certificate number: 118223) from 1st Lt. Benjamin R. Smith, Company F, 10th Kentucky Infantry, states he saw Nickolas killed in action on the battlefield on 20 September 1863.

Andersonville prison camp records state that Nickolas Mattingly, Company F, 10th Kentucky Infantry, was present at the prison. No entry date, exchange date or grave is listed. No additional information other than Nicholas' presence at the camp. The prison was in operation for 14 months between February 1864 till April 1865.

His unit mustered out on 6 December 1864 at Louisville, Kentucky. Nickolas was still listed as a prisoner of war and not mustered out.

Mary A. (Cecil) Mattingly filed a claim for widow's pension, with minor children, application on 26 August 1865 after the end of the war when her husband Joseph Nicholas Mattingly did not return. Widow pension application number: 107012; Certificate number: 118223. She listed two children under the age of 16, they were John A. and Alice M.

Additionally, on 5 June 1875 a Declaration for Pension of Children under Sixteen years of age application (minor's pension) was filed by Simeon Mattingly, of Raywick, Marion County, Kentucky, under application number: 221333 and Certificate number: 171579. He is listed as guardian on behalf of Alice M. Mattingly, daughter of Nickolas and Mary Ann (Cecil) Mattingly. According to a statement from family physician, Dr. John S. Moore, MD, filed on 7 September 1875 with the Clerk of the Marion County Court in Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky, in Simeon’ guardian pension file, that Mary Ann (Cecil) Mattingly, wife of Nickolas, mother of John A. and Alice M., died on 7 September 1873.

Whitehouse / Mattingly in Breckinridge Co
Hi William,

I either need your help or, I have a challenge for you.

I’m not from Kentucky, so the locations of these cemeteries doesn’t mean anything to me.

There is a couple in Find-A-Grave :
Isaac Washington Whitehouse #65338633, and
Rosa Ann (Mattingly) Whitehouse #37512118

They currently have four of their kids attached to their Find-A-Grave memorials.

I’m interested in an additional son, James W. Whitehouse, who died in 1903 in the Philippines, and who Rose had brought back to Kentucky for burial in 1904.

(I’ve got the newspaper article).

The article mentions a St. Mary’s Cemetery, BUT . . . I understand there are two of them near Mattingly, Kentucky, the old (original) one, and a later one, that was started about 1906.

Do you know enough about these two Saint Mary’s cemeteries that you could say, that in 1904, they would be talking about the old one, or the “new” one ??

I was wanting to make a Find-A-Grave Memorial for James, but I don’t know where to make it.

My interest in this is that I’m a Whitehouse descendant, but it was a branch that left Kentucky in the 1920’s.

The bulk of the Whitehouses were actually from the counties around the cluster of Mercer, Marion, Boyle, Anderson, Casey, Washington, etc.

The fact that there were Whitehouses from this family in Breckinridge County, is actually the outlier.

And another weired thing about this project is that James, because of the timing of his death (and the fact that he was in the military) actually got included on a Civil War index of headstones (because ALOT of Civil War vets were dying in the early 1900's). DON' BE FOOLED. He was in his twentys, and was a Philippines War vet.

Anyway, just checkin’ with different people to see if anyone knows about St. Mary's Cemetery.

Thank,
Patty

Brady H Mattingly
On the find a grave site mem #2891993 you have Brady's parents listed as Leonard Mattingly and Ethel Conner. Do you know this for a fact? There is a Wavie and Tilford Mattingly also buried in this cemetery. On the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census I have all 3 of these boys listed as children of George F Mattingly and Mary Jane Conder Mattingly.
I know that Mattingly is a popular name but all the information fits along with the dates. I just want to make sure that is/isn't him before I spend hours trying to find him.
You can send a response to cwbytswife@gmail.com if you would. We have spoke before about other memorials. Thank you

RE: DONNA TILLMAN - #90564611
At that time. I didn't know her husband was also deceased. I don't put info on any memorial that has names of living persons. I have linked her to her parents and husband. You can leave the death certificate on the memorial.
