Bio and Links
We were two sisters from Hobbs, NM, just 110 miles south of where Cathey lives in Portales. Sadly, Karla passed away on November 14, 2015, after a 15 year battle with congestive heart failure. She was born with mitral valve proplapse that went undetected until it led to chf when she was 40. Karla was almost 7 years younger than I and lived in the Phoenix AZ area. She had the genealogy bug a lot longer, and she passed it to me in 2001 when I moved here. Our mother, Vera "Coggin" Weldy is the one who turned us on to cemeteries when we were kids. We used to go with her to tour the old, out of the way cemeteries along the two-rut dirt roads of Lea County where many of her family is buried. We loved looking at the old beautiful stones, for those that have been there the longest, and the most unusual names. I would gladly make photos of area headstones, but I'm waiting for Santa to bring me a new camera. I've got my fingers crossed so maybe I can help others who live far away to see what the graves of their ancestors look like. Cathey

Would you please tell me where in the cemetery the grave is? there are three sections to this cemetery. Please let me know as I am one of his great great great granddaughters and we live near Lampasas. We would sure like to know just where he is buried. thank you so much!!! Linda Moore

RE: Melvin Jones
I'm sorry but I have not found a picture of her. I have searched ancestry and genealogy bank for newspapers but I did not find one.

RE: John Richard Coggin Family portrait
A cousin of ours(his second wife's line) contacted me with that. Have you seen the picture of Grandpa Levie that I added? She gave me that. She was given a ton of pictures of our family but does not know who very many of them are. She will be glad to know who Levie is for sure.

RE: Melvin Jones
I'm not really related to the family other than Melvin was my step grandfather. I only got interested because my mother hated him and she doesn't hate anyone. My grandmother was still married to him all these years but never lived with him while I was alive. Now that I have gotten interested in genealogy, I got interested in trying to find him. I thought this might be him in Arizona but I was not positive because he is from Mississippi. It wasn't until I found your story on findagrave that I was certain it is him. Do you know anything about his life after my grandmother left him? As to your question about the article, I have only found a few and I thought one of them may have had a picture because I remember commenting on it. I will look and see if I can find it. I don't think he received any time except when first questioned. He did marry the woman he was caught with because when I asked my mother about the murder, she said she knew nothing about it. She met Eula and I guess thought that was Melvin's mother. Back then I'm sure things were not spoken about. I will look in my files and see if I can find a picture. I could be mistaken but I will let you know.

No, I don't have a picture of his mother but I saw one on the newspaper article about her murder. It is a black and white picture but it is the only one I have ever seen.

This picture is the only one you have seen because it was my grandmother's and nobody has seen it since the 1950's. , I found it in one of my grandmothers picture frames behind another picture. She was his wife.

James Frank Coggin

James is my ggg-grandfather. I know there is oral tradition in my family that his middle name was Frank and his wife was Margaret "Maggie" Tate, but I haven't found any actual documentation for either of these. I'm hoping you may have it, since you have specific death dates for them both. Are you able and willing to share?

Thanks so much,
Susan Tow
