One of the best features of Find A Grave is that it provides a forum where years of genealogical research can be shared with others. Please let me know if you have additional biographical or statistical information for any of my memorials, as it is always welcome. The wealth of knowledge that others have sent to me through Find A Grave is astounding. |
If you are aware of links for parents and/or spouses that I have not yet added, I would appreciate it if you would use the edit tab to leave the name and memorial number of the person or people who should be linked.
Thanks to all those who have generously shared your family stories and beautiful photos with me. I sincerely appreciate being allowed to add them to the memorials for your loved ones. The pictures and studio portraits that for years have been carefully preserved in family photo albums, add such a wonderful dimension to Find A Grave. They help create a memorial tribute that is all the more special and meaningful.
Before asking for a memorial transfer, please determine whether or not this is really necessary. Transfers of management should only be requested if you have extensive changes to make to a memorial. You can add photos and suggest corrections even if you are not the memorial manager. Simply having someone in your family tree is not grounds for a transfer request. It would be impossible for all contributors to manage their entire family trees.
Transfers will only be considered if they comply strictly with Find A Grave guidelines. You must state your exact relationship to the deceased. People who request transfers and then fail to improve and maintain the memorial are certainly not honoring the memory of their family member.
Bulk surname transfers will not be considered under any circumstances.
Unless otherwise noted, all bios on my memorials were researched and written by me. Post-1922 verbatim obituaries have not been included in order to avoid copyright violations.
I have put a lot of time and effort into my memorials on Find A Grave. I strive to make sure that the information on them is as accurate as possible, but I am realistic and know that mistakes do happen. Please use the edit tab to leave a message regarding any errors or omissions that need to be corrected.
By working together, we can continue to build Find A Grave into a better and better site!
Note: 30 Sep 2013 marked a very sad day for all Find A Grave contributors when the founder of this website sold us out to ancestry.com.
I will continue to add to and maintain my memorials as long as Find A Grave remains a completely free website, open to all without charge.

|Lois Hendricks||RE: Elizabeth Sylvester Deckard|
A simple change in spelling a name can make a long lost relative hard to find. But the detective work in genealogy is what makes it so addictive to me. Now I'm searching for James and Mary Polly's parents.
Mary Polly's picture of her tombstone isn't very clear on Find A Grave so when I get her stone more readable I will add a better one I hope.
It has been so nice messaging with you. So glad we got to meet even though it was just on line. I guess we are distance cousins. If you should ever get to visit Smithville I live just 2 miles north of the cemetery, in Sanders. You will have to stop by and see me. I live in the house my grandfather Martin Chambers built in 1900. My folks are also buried in Smithville Cemetery. If you should happen to do face book you can friend me if you like, Lois Ridge Hendricks is how you'll find me. I have a thistle as my picture.

Thank you Lynn for your quick response.
Ok, I think we are getting things on the right track. I could not find a George either and removed him as a sibling from my notes, so we agree there.
I thought Elizabeth and Adam Deckard was divorced only when I thought she was "Eliza". But now believe she died and Adam just remarried.
I was able to make more connections from your updates on most of the siblings of Eliza. But I couldn't find Ellen on Find A Grave. I believe you have her as Ellen Sylvester Burkhart on your updates.
So, for Elizabeth since she matches the census and marriage licenses I would like to add her to Find A Grave with her remains not found and as a daughter of James and Mary Polly Sylvester. I truly believe that she could be in the Deckard Cemetery located in Clear Creek Twp. on Mt. Ebal Rd on the edge of the Pointe Gulf Resort without a marker. Or she could have been in any of the cemeteries they moved because of Lake Monroe without a marker.
But I don't want to ad her as James and Mary Polly's daughter without your agreement. And I don't want to ad her just yet as I have found her listed as M. Elizabeth and as Mary Elizabeth in a few places and would like to research her name just a bit more.
I am a member of the Monroe County History Center Cemetery Committee and have been cleaning the Sylvester, Jacob Deckard and Eliza's tombstones. We are hoping to have a work day at Smithville Cemetery this year and clean and straighten some of the stones in the older part of the cemetery. We thinking of set up at the Farmer's Market at the old Smithville School with information about the MCHC Cemetery Committee and maybe recruit some help. The church no longer cares for the cemetery and the County Trustee just doesn't have the man power or money to do more than mow the grass.
Thanks so much for your help and input.

Thank you for your kind and gracious words! We need more good people like you doing good work.

I found some more information about the Sylvester genealogy at the Monroe History Center. A paper written by someone at the Allen County Genealogy Center states the ACGC was in the process of writing a book on the Monroe County Sylvesters. I can email you a copy of this paper if you wish to contact me at email@example.com It has a lot of information but is not signed or dated. I hope to contact them in the near future.
To summarize the important part it says that James M Sylvester Sr and his wife Mary "Polly" Howard had 7 children: Elizabeth, Margaret, Eliza, Ellen, Ransom, Foris "Farr", and James Jr.
If this is true then Elizabeth and Eliza were sisters. And that would be where the common mistake is made that Eliza was Elizabeth Deckard Shields' mother. Eliza is the name on Eliza's tombstone in Smithville Cemetery. Also, Lizzie is usually the nickname back then for Elizabeth not Eliza and Liza was usually the nickname for Eliza.
Do you have a list of James and Mary Polly's children?
Thank you so much for all your help.

Hi! I'm wondering where you got the pictures of Minnie? She was my great-great-grandma and I would LOVE to find more information on her and her family. Also, where did you find the marriage info? I need it all! :)

My parents were John Ellsworth and Martha Neff, John's parents were Wm Walter Ellsworth and Anna Estella Stafford, Wm's parents were Rufus Ellsworth and Marticha Flora, her parents were George Flora and Mary Butcher, Mary was a sister to David Henry Butcher. and so forth. So I guess we are related in some way. Ha,
