Bio and Links
Bio Photo Donna Burkert Grothaus; born and resided in Northwestern Ohio until 1969. Since have lived in Washington state. My interest in genealogy stems from a passionate love of family & history. Eight generations of our family have resided on property our German ancestors settled on in the 1850's. My quest to learn more about our families began at an early age and blossomed in the 1970's after learning about the availability of records. I have pursued (more accurately been obsessed) with discovering each of our ancestors, their families, places they lived & history of the time periods. I have traveled to many of those areas in an attempt "to walk in their foot steps" and uncover proofs and clues. Find A Grave is a wonderful source for finding and uniting our families. The time, effort and interest of other FAG members who have contributed corrections and photos is most appreciated.

James Barden (Harriet Wygent Barden #89272909
Hello Donna (Continued)
So after James' discharge, he re-enlisted into Company I, Michigan 4th Infantry Regiment on 08 Sep 1864. Mustered out on 11 Feb 1865 at Huntersville, AL.(actually Huntsville, Alabama)
Since he mustered out on the date stated as his death, that is unlikely. (unless you have further evidence). I would guess he came home and died sometime later and is buried at the same cemetery as Harriet, although not recorded in Find A Grave.(Lakeside Cem @ Port Huron, MI)
You can find this additional information on Ancestry.com under 'James Barden Civil War Record.' This record does not appear in the Brown Books.
Regards
R. Larson

James Barden (Harriet Wygent Barden #89272909
Hello Donna:
Regarding the note for Harriet's spouse, James Barden (aka BEARDEN) who mustered into the 22nd Michigan Infantry as Corporal on 14 Aug 1862, he was not killed in Alabama. He was discharged for disability at Detroit, Michigan 5 Apr 1863. (probably due to illness or injury).

His son William Barden enlisted in the same unit. William married Elizabeth T. Boshaw.

RE: Katherine Walrod Memorial
Yes, that is her father, Michael Bowers. I have not been able to locate anything on her mother after 1880. Sorry for not getting back to you earlier.

Jonah & Lorinda Howe
Hi Donna,

When my husband and I discovered the grave sites of your family members, we found a couple things that you may find interesting. First, Lorinda's name is actually spelled "Laurinda" and we have updated her profile to reflect this.

Secondly, you are missing her birth date. Her headstone reads "Laurinda, wife of Jonah Howe, died Aug 12, 1861, age 75 or 78 [the 2nd number is unclear], 3 months and 16 days. So it looks like she was born in either 1783 or 1786.

Next, Jonah's headstone is in far worse shape than Lorinda's, which is surprising as they died within a few months of each other. It is also typical in older graves, such as this one, for the man's tombstone to be nicer than the wife's. However, with this couple, her tombstone is much nicer.

Lastly, Jonah's head stone reads: Jonah Howe, died March 1861, In the arms of ________. The last word is illegible.

We hope this has helped. If you need anything else, let us know.

RE: Florence Betz Welthy Edit
Hi Donna,
Glad I could help. When I saw your note that said Florence died in 1921, but then her name showed up in the 1930 and 1940 censuses you had me very intrigued. It was fun to figure it out.
Happy dead-relative hunting!!

RE: James F. Rockwell Headstone Photo
Donna,
You are so very welcome.
What a beautiful drive through Minnesota lake country this was.
The photos that have the surrounding area are my favorite to post. As such I appreciate you noticing that and I'm happy you like them.
Thanks for your request.

Eleanor Elsa Graves Smith
Dear Donna:

I read in Find-a-grave the information you entered about my ggg grandmother Eleanor Elsa Smith. Wondering if you might be able to answer any of the following questions:

1. Where in NY was she born?

2. My records show one of her sons was Lyman Smith who died in 1863 while in the Civil War. Would you happen to have any information on any of his children with Fatina / Fatima Gale?

Helen M. Smith - b. 1834 - Onondaga,NY
Francis M Smith - b 1836 same
Sarah J Smith - b. 1838 same
Caroline E Smith b. 1846 same

I have a good deal of information regarding my Smith ancestors and am very willing to share info with you if you are interested.

Sincerely,

Bob Philo

I noticed you manage the memorial for Esther (# 16257916). I'm just curious, but do you have a family connection to her? She's on my family tree as well and I've just started collecting source material for her.
