We Are The Chosen |
We are the chosen. In each family there is one who seems called to find
the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to
tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve.
Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing
life into all who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe.
All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those
who have gone before cry out to us, "Tell our story!" So, we do. In
finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before
now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the
ancestors, "You have a wonderful family; you would be proud of us." How many times
have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me?
I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I
and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be
lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying, "I can't let this
happen." The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to
doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able
to accomplish, how they contributed to what we are today. It goes to
respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up,
their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep
pride that the fathers fought and some died to make and keep us a Nation.
It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us.
It is of equal pride and love that our mothers struggled to give us at

Please correct the death date for Calvin L Starr in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Wellsville, Ohio. He was killed in action OCTOBER 8, 1982, not Jan 15 as shown on his memorial page.

|Gregory Schaefer||correction of memorial #36554787|
Dear Deborah Wall,
I am the grandson of Mildred C. Conant. The memorial #36554787 has omissions and errors:
1.) It is listed as "Mildred Concat Guskea"
Her correct name is Mildred C. Conant (Guskea after marriage) no "Concat"
2.) Birth: Oct. 1, 1898 Hookstown, Beaver County,
Pennsylvania - (this is omitted)
3.) Death: March 20, 1982 - not 1962
I have submitted and edit which shows "pending",
but if you can correct please do.
Thanks, Gregory Schaefer

No action required -- contacted Find A Grave "Mother Miller" re the daughter linked to this. I was looking at the tree and the ages of this
Fred E. looks more like would be her father's uncle / and there is a third Fred O that is presenting in research that needs to be
looked at as that life goes on to the 1940's. Just a head's up
that Mother Miller of Find A Grave -- the 'daughter's link' might contact.
No need to rush to merge memorials or anything yet. Let's see where this goes. There is a Fred that is nephew to this Fred E, w a second marriage, but there is also another Fred that might deserve a look before helping the family to a happy connection.
TY for your work. (fromthelittlelane) This Fred E is my grandmother's great uncle/ served in the CW. Wife married since just after the CW to 1912, and he lists no children in death records. Will work to
'keep it clear and easy to verify' / best 2 u & urs. :)

Thanks for the information on Mollie. I did some more searching through my material and did indeed find Mollie's name. I show her however, as the daughter of Edward and his first wife, Elizabeth. What you wrote regarding Arminda age is correct (she was 15 when Mollie was born), but Arminda isn't Mollie's mother. The 1900 Census, shows that Mollie (age 18) was living with Edward and Arminda (Minnie) along with Emma (age 12), Edward (10), Ethel (6), Pearl (3), Idella (1), Charles (24), and George (16). This is where the confusion may have occurred. The Census also shows that Edward immigrated to the U.S. in 1867, a new detail that I've added to his Memorial. Thanks again for your continual flow of information!
