When my wife and I joined Find A Grave and began contributing we soon realize we enjoyed the older cemetery that had been neglected and in a few instances lost. To prevent the possibility of these headstones being lost in the future we decided we would make sure the headstones were recorded photographically. We then realized this method of preserving records did not go far enough. We learned of an old small cemetery that we photographed that had been badly vandalized after we photographed it. There were no cemetery records available. Headstones in disarray and knew not where they were to be placed and some headstones destroyed. We decided to take our recording one step further. We began utilizing the new GPS technology. We take a coordinate measurement at each headstone photographed and place that coordinate on each photograph. This secures not only an image of the headstone but also offers the unique location of it.
And how many times have you visited a cemetery and had questions of its history? On occasion we may locate a forgotten cemetery and try to undertake learning more about a site so we sometimes will include the history of a location.
