I started researching my family history after my mother died from a hereditary disease but got hooked and have been climbing the family tree for over 30 years. I hope I have contributed to the family history for generations to come.|
I am a volunteer with the Portage Community Historical Society and they have allowed me to have a genealogy and historical research area in the Goin Museum. If you have an early Portage Township family, consider donating a copy of your family history to our museum.

CALVARY CEMETERY IN PORTAGE
For years I resisted doing Calvary because it is huge. I didn't want to do it just to up my numbers. The 3 other cemeteries I've worked on I was very diligent in doing everything as best I could, making multiply trips back to each cemetery every time a new phase was added to Find A Grave.
For a few reasons I was contacted by Judith Norman because a problem she was having at Calvary and we decided to "read" the whole cemetery for Find A Grave. After doing several areas at Calvary she passed away. I've had other volunteers helping but they have either passed away, moved away or just tired of working in Calvary.
You can imagine how excited I am when I realized that all I have to do is take the gravestone pictures and many of you will help me. I am so grateful for the help. Calvary is difficult, so many of the gravestones have sunk into the ground or are difficult to read. The best I can do is take the pictures as I see them. I take about 200 pictures a week and am only halfway done with section E. I do have other volunteers working in Section A and G.
Thanks you so much to all the transcribing volunteers. I've been notified of some duplicates, errors or questionable pictures and will deal with them as best I can. Thank you again for the help. Kathy
My Favorite Poem
A Daisy Beside the Rose
by Diana Sue Lindley Horton
Among the many flowers, God,
Within Your garden fair,
May I, a simple daisy be
So proudly standing there.
I need not be the most admired,
Great beauty to disclose;
It's certain in Your garden,God,
Not all can be a rose.
'Twould be to me an honor,
If where Your garden grows,
I could but be a daisy -
That stands beside the rose.

Hi Kathy, Can you please give me the Find A Grave# of the mother your talking about. I added a lot of changes in the last week. I don't remember.

Thanks for transferring my Uncle Joe and Aunt Louise. I do have a question as to why you are adding your own photos to a site that already has a photo posted.

What a wonderful contribution you are making as a volunteer. I appreciate all of your time and effort. I was wondering if you're willing to transfer memorials under your name? My grandmother, Margaret McCue #182493210, is one that was just added last week. I would like to take over her memorial.
Hey Kathy, just wanted to drop a line and say hello! Hopefully you found some help up there logging. I still havent made it up since you last posted. Hope all is well. Much love~ Misi

Thank you for making the edit so quickly!
|Peggy English||Michael Vito Gilardi|
This is rather crazy. You have Michael Gilardi in Calvary Cemetery in Portage, Indiana. I have him in the right cemetery which is Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA. I removed his picture from your Memorial, because my name was on it and I never put it on yours. I did put his picture on my Memorial of him, but when I removed hIm from yours he came off mine also. Are you going to deleate yours since you have him in the wrong cemetery? Our Memorial numbers are only one apart, never saw that before. Sincerely, PE

Hi, and you're welcome! Aside from a glitch I can't imagine how that got there. I know at that time I ran into quite a lot of things that looked like the result of buggy coding but not that particular memorial, and without it having a tombstone I'm thinking it happened when the memorial was created by the original person (maybe the one who uploaded the image of the guy?). I've seen comments on a few members' profiles indicating they've had the same types of problems.
