I have been interested in genealogy for about 11 years. I enjoy adding information to FAG and I enjoy adding obits to the memorials. I go to the Columbia, Marion County, Ms. Court House to go through the old news papers and add the obits to FAG. I appreciate everyone that has added the obits on the memorials. I am interested in the following names in my family tree: Fortenberry, Forbes, Tolar, Crawley, Merritt, Mullins, and McCleland (McLeland).

RE: Gates Cemetery, Improve, Marion County, MS
Hello again Shirley,

I will be glad to add the information for your approval. Just wanted to be sure that I understood. You are saying that Liza is listed beside Patrick in the cemetery book? If we are fairly sure of that, I will go ahead and add the information I have.

Unfortunately, I don't know who Eliza's parents were at this point. Working on that.

Don't know of any relation to Grahams, but if I run across it, I will let you know.

Thanks again,

Dana

Good morning Shirley. Thanks for your reply. Even if you could provide general directions (e.g. near the intersection of road A and road B), that would help. Of course, if you were able to visit and/or send photos of the graves, that would be even better. Here's what I have about the Gates Family (or at least my portion of them):

My maternal grandfather was Edward Gaston Whitehead (1895-1990). His mother was Jennie Wilks/Wilkes (1877-1951). She and her husband James Archie Whitehead are buried at the Bethel Church Cemetery in Marion County. Jennie's parents were John Ellis Wilks (1827-1899) and Matilda GATES Wilks (1849-1920). They are buried in the Wilks Cemetery, also in Marion County. Matilda's parents were Patrick Gates (1817-1898) and Eliza Goss Gates (b. 1827). Patrick is buried at the Gates Cemetery I am asking about. I believe the Liza Gates you listed is probably Eliza Goss Gates, but I am not sure. Patrick and Eliza were born in North Carolina. They apparently moved to Mississippi sometime between 1845 and 1849. Their first six children were born in North Carolina, but Matilda was born in Mississippi, as were the ensuing generations

I have a bit of additional detailed information about the Gates family, which I can provide if you are interested.

Thanks very much!

Dana

Gates Cemetery, Improve, Marion County, MS
Hello Shirley,

I am seeking information about the Gates Cemetery at the Improve Community in Marion County, MS. I have seen the Find A Grave records from the cemetery that you have recorded (thank you!), but I haven't been able to ascertain exactly where the cemetery is located. Can you provide that information?

One of my ancestors, Patrick Gates, is buried there. His wife's name was Eliza. I see a record of a "Liza" Gates of about the right age buried there, but don't know whether her grave is positioned next to his or not. I'd like to visit the cemetery the next time I am in MS and take photographs, etc. (I live in Florida.)

Thanks for your efforts, and any help you can provide.

I am curious if this grave actually belongs to Christian Thompson 17467323. It has her name listed as C. E. Thompson and I don't know where the E fits into her initials. Also I found a 1900 census that has john w Thompson as the father of the head at age 72 and widowed. The head is Leon l Thompson. If he was already widowed in 1900 Christian would have died before 1909. If you know anything on this I would appreciate your help. Thanks so much!

Good evening. Can I please ask for copies of the pictures you posted to subject memorial also be posted to my memorial for my family member Robert Baylor 66905323? My memorial was created before 86059875 and I have sent a request for it to be deleted since it is a duplicate. I am in the process of updating the memorial information.
