My name is Chester Wallace and I've been a member of Find-A-Grave for a couple of years now. I live in Marietta, Ga. and welcome any requests for photos within a feesable distance of zip 30066. I mainly work on logging deceased family members and local cemeteries to Atlanta. At the present I am working to log Marietta City Cemetery. I'm also currently working on a project to locate the graves of the victims of the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta, Georgia on December 7, 1946. I'm also working on a book about their lives as well as survivors, firemen and policeman who were on the scene so if anybody knows of anybody or family members of someone involved in the fire please let me know. I've been interested in cemeteries and especially genealogy since I was young. My grandmother would always want me to go with her to the local cemetery where I lived in Louisiana to visit her parents graves and they are on my site.
Good luck with finding your graves!

I have located 5 more Winecoff survivors you can add to your virtual cemetery. The are Jesse Reid Horne III # 155491361 , Cary Burr (Strickland) Horne # 155491416 , Daisy Belle McCumber # 140079857 , King Moses Luckey # 2891489 and Frank Leo Luckey # 48004732 I am a funeral director (formerly of Mayes Ward, H. M. Patterson, Horis Wards, Castellaw, Bellamy's Powder Springs) and I have some things you need to see your your work on the Winecoff. Nobody has ever seen these and you would be someone who should. My email address is Undertaker32ejw@aol.com Thanks
|Robert Clayton||RE: Hi Robert - Chet Wallace|
I'm sorry that I didn't realize until today that you sent this message quite a while back. I've placed some posts on findagrave.com but wasn't checking for messages. I ran across this message today by happenstance. By the way, I no longer routinely use the email address I used when I signed up for findagrave.com. So, again my apologies. If I can obtain a photo of Grace Lain (maiden name Slaughter) it would be my pleasure to forward it to you, but I have none in my possession and don't know of anyone who does. My great aunt Ann Wooten had a photograph of Paul Lain, which is the same photo as on the Winecoff Hotel memorial website. Aunt Ann passed away in 2011. Her daughter Sharon Wooten of Mayfield, Kentucky probably has that photo now. As far as I know, no relatives have any other photos of Paul Lain or of Grace. I have been at their graves in Wingo Cemetery in Wingo, Kentucky a couple of times, by the way, where many other of my relatives are buried. Genealogy has been a passion of mine since my youth. If I am ever able to obtain a copy of a photo of Grace Lain, I will most gladly forward a copy to you. Thanks for all your work in remembering the Winecoff victims. My mother, who passed away five months ago, knew Paul Lain, her mother's uncle, and his wife Grace, (who died when Mom was 11) but sadly couldn't relate any anecdotes about them nor could my grandmother, who passed away in 2011 although I queried both about them on multiple occasions for such anecdotes. The most I could get from my grandmother was that Paul and Grace Lain "lived high," i. e., spent lavishly, at least by my grandmother's standards. My great aunt Ann Wooten did relate that she remembered Paul Lain was so tall that he had to duck when he went through a doorway. In retrospect, though, I'm wondering if she was confusing Paul Lain with his brother Cecil Lain, who was according to my grandmother and mother about 6'8". I do devote a fair bit of my spare time to genealogy, so I will try to obtain a photo of Grace Lain and forward a copy if I ever obtain one. Thanks again for your work in helping to remember the Winecoff victims and best wishes in your endeavors.

On a related note, Gary W Painter's wife's grandfather was Ernest Charles Friedner (AKA Ernest C Smith) -- my great-grandfather. Ernest was also buried in Atlanta. If you're ever at Resthaven Cemetery in Decatur I'd love to get a photo of his headstone!! I've spent years tracing this side of the family and trying to piece together all the parts.

I've been researching my tree and have some information to add to the memorial for Gary W Painter. For whatever reason, Find A Grave's form is not working and an error is generated. So I thought I would send the info to you this way:
According to his 1967 engagement announcement, Pfc Gary William Painter was the son of Mrs. Eva G Painter and the late Hoke Smith Painter. He was a graduate of Campbell High School in Smyrna, GA. He married Julia Ann Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W Smith. Source: The Marietta Daily Journal, 18 Jul 1967
According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Gary W Painter was born 21 Feb 1948 in Smyrna, Cobb, Georgia, USA. He died serving as a U.S. Marine in Thua Thien, Vietnam.

|Heather Sanderson||RE: The Verrett family memorials|
I'd like to see these memorials on the "Honoring" feature o the search feature, so they get some flowers and notes. I guess I understand that the murders are a source of deep sadness for the family. It's hard enough for those of us who lived near Berwick at the time. My house was less than four miles from the murder scene. Is there a way to get them listed in "Honoring"? I feel queasy even connected to their memorials, by sponsoring them. I've done some research and found an article from an Alabama newspaper about the Verrets being found finally, in the marsh near Golden Meadow. It's all very sad. Your grandfather was the sheriff, right? He sponsored my softball team back in the spring of 1970, I think it was. Thank you for responding.

Chet, I lived in Bayou Vista, LA and was seven when Barbara and her three children were brutally murdered by Roy Mejia, over in Berwick. I have been looking into their murders again. I see you manage the memorials. I sponsored them, all four tonight. It would be nice to see some memorial information for them. Do you know any of their surviving relatives?I'd like to see all four of the Verretts featured in the virtual memorial that comes up next to the search. How can we do that? Are you interested in helping with that? They deserve more virtual visits and flowers. Their murders rocked our community. None of us have forgotten the tradgedy. People are still talking about these murders to this day, even on Face Book. Anyway, thank you kindly for managing their memorials. Signed, Heather Fridge Sanderson
PS: I have also lived in the Atlanta area. I raised my children up in Cartersville.
