"In each family, there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts, but instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe."

Seen on another contributor's profile. I couldn't agree more.

"the dead are not far from us... they cling in some strange way to what is most still and deep within us" - William Butler Yeats

RE: Thomas Evans
Hello Sharon.

Thanks for going to the trouble of adding details of Thomas's life to his memorial - very much appreciated.

I managed to access "Prairie Trails to Blacktop Carlyle and District 1882 - 1982" by way of www.ourroots.ca. I was surprised to see a photograph of Thomas and his family dating from 1944.

Prior to reading the article I knew very little about Thomas's life other than he ended up living in Carlyle, Sask. after leaving Wales in the late 1920's with his wife Lydia and their two young sons John and Douglas.

I have occasional contact with Thomas's granddaughter Jane (my second cousin) who lives in Ormond Beach, Florida, USA.

Kind regards

Richard

Joseph Turton
Lt. Francis G. Turton
Hi Sharon:
Let me begin by thanking you for maintaining the memory of my late Uncle Lt. Francis G. Turton. Sadly, I never had the priviliege to meet my Uncle Fran and thank him for his bravery during WW II. I had recently done some research on him and was fortunate in discovering "Find A Grave" and your contribution. There were a few pieces of information that I can offer about Lt. Turton:
A. He had three additional siblings:
1. Austin Turton, brother, 1918-1924
2. Mary Turton (Johnson) 1916-1996
3. Anne Martin Turton CSJ (Gertrude) 1923-1973

B. Lt. Turton was awarded the Silver Medal for gallantry on or about Nov. 1944. There was a Troy Record article about this award, but I can no longer locate it. However, in the Troy Record/Watervliet News, July 16, 1949, an article appears regarding the funeral rites for Lt. Turton whose remains were buried in Germany and had no been transferred to the Family ZPlot at St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy, NY. The article again mentions his Silver Star Award.

C. Reference the book "The Last Roll Call, 29th Infantry Div. Victorious, 1945" by Joseph Balkoski. Among the biographical references is this passage on pg. 182; "So far the three-day effort to capture Dortmund had cost the 116th 124 casaulties.....". "ONE CASUALTY THAT OCCURRED THE NEXT DAY, APRIL 7, EPITOMIZED THE PITLESS FORTUNES OF WAR. LT. FRANCIS TURTON, A 33-YEAR- OLD NATIVE OF ONTARIO, CANADA, WHO LED A PLATOON OF STUART M-5 LIGHT TANKS IN THE 747th (ATTACHED TO THE 116TH) WAS DESCRIBED BY A COMRADE AS 'AN EFFICIENT OFFICER, RESPECTED BY HIS MEN AS AN EXCELLENT COMBAT LEADER AND ALL-AROUND HONORABLE PERSON'. TURTON HAD SURVIVED MONTHS OF SEVERE COMBAT, MOST NOTABLY IN THE 175TH INFANTRY'S EPIC STAND AT BOURHEIM, GERMANY IN NOVEMBER 1944. A MILE BEHIND THE FRONT, HIS LIFE WAS SNUFFED OUT IN A MOMENT BY A TRAGIC MISHAP WHEN A TANKER, PUSHING HIMSELF OUT OF AN M5 HATCH ACCIDENTALLY KNOCKED INTO A FULLY PRIMED MACHINE GUN AND CAUSED IT TO OPEN FIRE. THE UNLUCKY TURTON STANDING DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE GUN, WAS KILLED. A FELLOW TANKER, LT. HOMER WILKES, STATED THE OBVIOUS WHEN HE NOTED, 'HIS DEATH UNDER THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES SADDENED ALL WHO KNEW HIM'.

Thank you!
Thanks so much, Sharon, for all your efforts in Upper Branch. I'm far away from home now in BC, and it's nice to be able to look up these things (your little message for my brother Dwayne Beck was sweet) from such a distance.
