I am a history buff, especially Memphis history. I have an interest in Memphis entrepreneurs, philanthropists and notorious citizens.
People often ask why I enjoy graving:
1. I love history. Beneath every headstone is a story, and someone worthy of remembering.
2. Cemeteries are rarely crowded.
3. Cemeteries never charge admission.
4. Cemeteries are generally nice, clean and well kept. Like a very nice walk in the park.
5. Genealogy should be free. I hope the stuff I post is helpful to others.
My favorite FindaGrave project was finding all the co-conspirators associated with the Memphis Chapter of the Tennessee Children's Home Society (1927-1950). Georgia Tann, the infamous "Baby Thief" and Black Market kidnapper, seller (and killer) of children was the head of one of the darkest parts of Memphis history. She, and her story are not ‘famous' according to Find-A-Grave, although she stole, sold, trafficked and caused the deaths of over 5,000 children. (More lives effected than Al Capone even thought about).
Mary Tyler Moore won an Emmy award for her portrayal of Tann in the television movie, "Stolen Babies," 1993.
• Georgia Tann
• Judge Camille Kelley Juvenile Court Judge who removed parental rights, and gave Georgia the papers needs to traffic children.
• Abe Waldauer Memphis City Attorney under Boss Crump who changed laws to keep the Home running. Also, Georgia Tann's personal attorney.
• Boss E. H. Crump The Political Clout, and Memphis Mayor.
• Ann Atwood Hollinsworth Lesbian lover and adopted daughter of Georgia Tann, and Part Time helper at the home.
I have recently retired and will be spending more time in the cemeteries around Memphis during the day. The picture includes Pepper, who adopted me in 2002. She Passed away December 27, 2013, and loved to join me graving too.
With the help of Margie Collins, we have tried to capture all burials at Stephensons Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. I grew up attending church there, and have lots of family at the cemetery. If you, or your family have connections with Stephenson Chapel, join our FaceBook group:
My current project is Forest Hill Cemetery-Midtown. I have been working on one section at a time. The sections complete at this time: A, AA A Ext, B,B Ext, C, D, 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,11,12,13,15,14,16,16A, 17,19, 19B, 20, 25, 26, 31, 31 West, 31 East, 32, 33, 33A, 34A, 34B, 34C, 34D. If you are working there, let me add your sections to the list, so we don't duplicate efforts.
If you have info on anyone I have added, please let me know. If you are kin or friends to anyone, I will gladly transfer, on request. Happy Graving!

|Karen Riley Hall||Memorial #151687789 for Isabell Thompson Starkes and Mem. # 151687790 for Jesse H. Starkes|
I would like to ask for a transfer please for Jesse Starkes and his wife Isabelle Starkes. This couple are the mother and step - father to John Henry Jones Mem. # 151687801 that I have also asked for a transfer of. I am related through the Jones line and would like to write bios and include a lot of other Find A Grave Memorial links to tie them to their extended family.
Thank You for posting these memorials and for those who made pictures. I and several others have been looking for these relatives for over twenty years. I do notice their tombstones have the name Starkes and on all the documentation I have for them the name is spelled Starks but I know who Jesse's father, mother, and grandparents are as well as Elizabeth Isabelle Thompson's family.

|Karen Riley Hall||Transfer of John H. Jones at Mem.# 151687801 (1866-1931)|
May I request a transfer of John Henry Jones? I am a cousin and would like to add a bio and census reports and then link all the Jones family together and tie them to their IL family.
I have a letter from John Henry that places his family in the Memphis area in the early 1900's and has put me on a journey to connect all the dots for the bigger Jones picture. I appreciate your efforts in photographing this cemetery and making memorials. Without your efforts in making this memorial I might have searched for longer.
My Find A Grave Contributor # is #47268764 Karen Riley Hall. Thanks so much!

I read all about your infamous "Baby Broker" and saw that she was born in the same town where my aunt and uncle live. Sort of small world. Have fun on Find A Grave!
|GeekyGraveGirl||"Strange Deaths" suggestion|
James Thimm (a second cousin, foster family) who was murdered in a cult in Nebraska. I did not know him personally, but know his family well.

Here are two strange, sad, but true death memorials of people I've known. Thought they deserved a place of honor in your "strange deaths" virtual cemetery:
MJ Sharp (murdered in Congo, working for the UN); Memorial #178064878
Sheralynn Neff (skydiving accident, cause unknown), our niece: Memorial #167411213
I read with interest many of the memorials in this collection. Memphis has always struck me as an interesting place, sort of in a crossroads where so many cultures converge. We've been "through", but never stopped for any length of time to visit.

This John J Smith is not the son of Andrew & Sarah E Vickers Smith. He is more likely the son of Andrew j & Sarah Phillips Smith. According to my grandmother Margaret F Smith Ware, she had only one brother Andrew. Leaving Tennessee after 1880,Andrew & Sarah lived in Brazos & Johnson Counties only.
Hi Neil, Thank you so much for allowing use of your photos in my family tree. I will be happy to give credit. I certainly can't claim it because I cannot walk the cemeteries and must rely on the generosity of folks like you.
