RAINSFORD ISLAND CEMETERY - BOSTON HARBOR 2-20-2014

Burials have been posted from 1850 - 1896 (end of burial activity). Currently searching for Civil War Soldiers. Burial information indicates sad and tragic place.

GALLOPS ISLAND CEMETERY BOSTON HARBOR 7-3-2014 JAN 1871 -MARCH 31, 1873 JAN 1902 - MARCH 1902

CATHOLIC MOUNT AUBURN - UPDATE 6-19-2016

145 Civil War Veterans found, although there may be many more due to common names and occupation noted as "Laborer"

Completed adding available newspaper information for cause of death: 26 homicide, 698 accidents and 23 suicides.

Many burials at Catholic Mount Auburn are misidentified on the City/Town death records as being buried at other cemeteries. All area cemeteries are mentioned. The Mount Auburn Cemetery (noted at Cambridge) is incorrectly noted many times.

1854 - December 31, 1920 Edited using death certificates. Online death records end at 1920.

MISSING RECORDS: I HAVE VERFIED WITH THE CATHOLIC CEMETERY ASSOCIATION AND SEEN FOR MYSELF THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THEM.
I ADDED BURIALS BY A REVIEW OF THE DEATH RECORDS OF BOSTON, CAMBRIDGE, SOMERVILLE, WATERTOWN, BELMONT, CHELSEA. --

Thanks
I really appreciate all the research you have done. I knew my ancestor died on Rainsford Island from small pox. I felt so sad that he died away from his family at only sixteen years old. He must of joined the Mass 5th Colored Calvary to follow in the footsteps of his older brothers. They were Native Americans. Thank you for researching and posting the history of the island. At least now we know more about his circumstances and I can keep this history for my family. Maybe one day we can visit and pay our respects.

Thank you, I would've never known where one of my more mysterious ancestors was buried if it wasn't for your work!

Mary E Gatt, #114182195
Thank you for creating this memorial for Mary Ellen Gatt, the eldest sister of my 2d great-grandmother, Jane Gatt.

Birth record:
Birth no. 271, Charlestown, MA, Mary Ellen Gatt, b 21 Jun 1860, daughter of James R & Mary (Downing) Gatt.

Death record:
Death 393, Charlestown, MA. Mary E Gatt, b abt 1860, d 20 Oct 1865 at Charlestown, Massachusetts, Res. 12 Corey. Death Age: 5y 4m. Father Name: James J Gatt Mother Name: Mary Downey. Cause: congestion of the brain. Burial: Mt Auburn, Cambridge.

I was wondering if you could help me locate the location of her father's grave? Her father's death was recorded in Charlestown: James J. Gatt, 33 yo, d 17 Feb 1872 at Corey St, Charlestown; occupation--carpenter; parents--George & Marion; cause--heart disease; burial location--Malden.

I am assuming that the indication "Malden" could denote either Holy Cross or St. Mary. Any assistance you could provide would be most appreciated.

Best Regards,

Jane Gatt Muir Sellery

RE: John
The John "Jack" O'Malley that I have a memorial for was my father in law. He was a truck driver.

Birds and Peter Burke under RM's gravestone
Thanks for clarifying!

I copied your note about who was buried under RM's gravestone with a flowers note I left for
each of the other RM let share his grave so you don't get this question again:

"Per manager of these memorials, also buried in this grave:
BIRD, CHILD
BIRD, HUGH
BIRD, MARGARET E
BIRD, MARY
BURKE, PETER"

Thanks for keeping track of these many complicated details at this historic cemetery.

Bill,
Thank you VERY much for the photo. I really appreciate it. Thank you for the effort that you took even though there was not a stone, and the careful way that you added the arrow to the photo!
All the very best to you,
Molly

RE: LTC James Fleming
There was a government stone ordered for him and shipped to his cemetery. The order was dated Nov 29, 1879. It was possibly never shipped, lost, stolen of is buried beneath the ground- which I have found very often. If you know his exact grave location you could probe around. Otherwise, contact the local Veteran group and place an order which will be made if you are a descendant or perhaps even if you're not.
Good luck
Neil

John Cox 1815-1835
Took me a while to remember the source.

It was newspaper extracts at Ancestry.com that led to discovery of his whereabouts.

I updated to include additional info in his bio.

You might able to find more listings of deaths at Rainsford Island through Ancestry.com's "U.S., Newspaper Extractions from the Northeast, 1704-1930"
