Ella Belle Kimbrel
Thank you so much for the death certificate! Hard to get from Kansas, and more precise than family story. Any chance you can get Thomas death certificate? I think he was in Topeka census 1930 using name Kimble. By the way, they did divorce and I have his side of it, says she was living in Oklahoma.

Cousin -- I found your info on and have some questions about sources, etc (even tho you gave them). I do have his death info, inc will; wonder where the General part came from, and if you have gathered more since you compiled all that. If you would email me, I would give you my phone number and maybe we could talk about all that. My records are somewhat confusing, to say the least! June

Nancy Willis Cates
Thank you so much for posting these pictures. I am also a great-great granddaughter. My grandfather was Edwin Farnsworth Cates, son of Moore Edward Cates, son of Charles Cates and Nancy. We had also heard the story that she was of Cherokee descent, but that she denied it and didn't want anyone to know. So, do we know what the truth is? Thanks again! Debbie

RE: Cyrus Strother
Thanks. He was my great grand Uncle, most of my data on the Cooks comes from a family genealogy done by Everett Cook in 1998. Do you have a web site or family tree on line and would you be willing to share some of the information. I know that there is one very large post for Cooks on one site, but primary sources are hard to follow. My Maternal Grandmother's father was Leander Tecumsuh "Tump" Cook.

Cyrus Strother "Straud" Cook
While trying to "clean" up some of my notes and files I think there is a typo in the date of death for Straud Cook. My records show it as 1864 and it is listed as 1862, but it appears to be 1864 on the stone in the picture. Is that correct? I can't enlarge the picture enough to be absolutely certain.

Uncle George!
It wasn't until I saw his picture that I realized you must be a descendant; and since my grandpa Clair Cleveland Cook wasn't listed as a child of Cyrus Strother Cook, you may not even be aware of him. My mother was Elnora Belle (Cook) Gridley, and we went to church with your family in Topeka. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's where I got a hand-me-down blue cape that I wore to church quite often. I'm deep into genealogy on the Willis/Cates family and have quite a lot on the Yoakums - Ella Belle Kimbrel's mother was a Yoakum. Would love to hear from anyone interested in exchanging family info.

Frances Elizabeth Cook
Thank you for posting the information on my ancestor. She was the daughter of Charles & Nancy (Willis) Cates and the story (which she hotly denied to her grandchildren) was that Cyrus Hantsford Cook bought her for land & cattle. It was also said that she was of Indian descent; my grandfather C.C. Cook denied that but everyone else in the family considered it a fact. She owned land in Jefferson County KS which Grandpa's cousin Gene Cook said she paid for with her own money.
