The Dash
by Linda Ellis copyright 1996

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
from the beginning…to the end.

He noted that first came the date of birth
and spoke the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile,
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read,
with your life’s actions to rehash…
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent YOUR dash?

Hi Tom,
Herbert B. Holl is buried in this cemetery with his first wife. The gravestone of Hildegard Holl shows that she was his wife from 1998 to 2000.

Will you kindly correct. Thanks!

Hello! I don't live in Florida but my brother and stepmother do. I'll ask them which cemetery Dad is buried in. So are you saying that I just need to send you a picture of his tombstone and you will transfer? I guess I'm trying to figure out what you need exactly to prove he is my dad and that it is the same Billy R. Smith. He did pass away in 2010. I know that is for sure. Thanks! I'll contact Richard and find out for sure which cemetery he is in ... :-)

Okay will do. I'm at work right now but my birth certificate is at home so I'll send that along to you tonight. Other identifying information that also may help. My Dad was in the air force and retired after 20 years to the town he and my stepmother and brother were living in, Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. His wife is Ines and his son is Richard. They own a frame shop business in Ft. Walton Beach that my Dad built himself from the ground up. When he bought his house he purposely found a house that had a lot that backed up to a commercial district thus allowing him to build his frame business on the back side of their lot fcing the commercial district. He started his business doing printing like on napkins, matchbox holders, etc. but eventually ventured and then succeeded in a successful frame business. He had been stationed at Eglin Air Force Base before retiring but had lived in Spain, Turkey, and the Phillipines (those are the places I remember but there may be more). He met Ines when he was stationed in Spain. My brother is now about 44 years old because he was 4 years old when my son was born and my son is 40. Richard is engaged to Michelle Harder and they have one daughter, Ruby.

Hi! I believe the Billy R. Smith you manage is my Dad ... He did pass away in 2010 in Florida. His name was billy Ray Smith and he lived in Ft. Walton Beach. Wife Ines. Son Richard (my half-brother). Would it be possible to transfer the memorial to me? Thank you very much.

Made the edits as you requested. Would you please get a photo of his marker? I was in his wedding, and the poem on your profile page is from a dear friend.
