How to find oldest graves (thanks Mike Maxton!)
1) Begin a new search
2) In the last name field, enter 123.
3) Check the box for "Do partial name search on surname".
4) Choose BORN BEFORE 1840.
5) Choose DIED AFTER 1400.
These are a little counter-intuitive. The death year after 1400 (you can vary this some, if you like) is EXCLUDING all the unknown death years. But if we just did those death years, we would be looking at hundreds of thousands of records, so we narrow it further by adding BORN BEFORE 1840. If you are looking at a County that is very old, you may want to narrow the search even further by changing to BORN BEFORE 1820 or older.
6) Choose a State and a County. You can't do the complete US or a state, in most cases. Your query will time out before you get any results.
7) Choose order by death date.
If you haven't over-loaded the servers, you'll get a result in about 60 seconds.

Frankz says:
just add &GSob=d to the end of a cemetery's url ... sort cemetery by death date ... likewise, use &GSob=b to sort by birth date.

RE: Allen and Stewart SACs
Glen Haven interments are 99% black. I've met many family members when I'm there and heard many stories. I guess some families just can't afford markers. That's why I was so happy to see that James Allen has a nice one. The mowers have chewed up many of the metal ones. I can see the barren dirt where people have been interred over 2 years with pieces of metal markers and some with dirt and no markers. I have 2 unknowns with dates and one that just says Anderson. I've added about 400 memorials and am on the last leg of my final walk through to be sure I haven't missed anyone. I started on this cemetery in 2016 and it's been a real labor of love. I watch the Free Lance-Star daily for GH burials. If you want to read something sad, look at the memorials for Leroy, Debra or Nichole Jones or Cory and Rodrick Stephney.

RE: Allen and Stewart SACs
You're welcome. What a blessing to be able to replace the funeral home marker with a real one for James Allen. As you may know, so many in this cemetery just have the metal or plastic one provided by the funeral home. I found many of those bent and falling apart. Some won't make it much longer and some of the graves are now unmarked. Just about to finish up at Glen Haven.

I just looked at his memorial--both photos are right side up. Could you have meant that someone else's photo was upside down? LMK.

RE: SAC corrections for the Carters
Hi Edwin,
Have you ventured out lately to explore our Carter ancestral roots? I have been laking in my efforts over increasing concerns of ticks this year and later chiggers, and of course most of these old cemeteries that are not maintained have poison ivy.
Wishing you successful endeavors,
John

Thanks for giving me the heads up, Edwin--
I was off by 1 day, 1 year. I found (and posted) his Death Cert and updated info per that.

Also, I found and transcribed his obit. That verifies his DOD.

Whoever got his marker used neither Death Cert nor obit to conclude DOD.
What they relied on was his wife's CSA Widow Pension Application and determined that her pretty handwriting's "2" was a "21".

I initially had him as having served in the 30th Virginia, but widow's said application listed him as in 1th. I found William's CSA Pension application under "Dickerson" within which he listed 17th Virginia.
His bio now reflects that.

Finally, he states (he couldn't write) on pension application he was 71 at that time (Sept 1904), so he was likely born in 1933.
Respectfully,
Dan

Thank you for the pics Edwin!
This does create a problem with the dates. I have never had a discrepancy this great before. I wonder if whoever commissioned the stone was just wrong? It looks like a fairly new stone, so maybe a family member had it made after his wife passed, possibly several years after her internment. Just speculation, but who knows? I cited two sources in the bio including the VA Certificate of Death, so I guess I'll just leave it for now. Any suggestions? I'm flummoxed.

RE: SAC corrections for the Carters
Thanks Edwin,
I agree that the Carter Family is important and further needs to be better documented. In the cemetery on the fringe of the Park, I would hope that previous observances on likely foot stones, would be seen. If we do not get the Cater's now, likely never will happen in the future.
Take care,
John
