Solomon Hawk
I see you posted a photo of Solomon Hawk died Dec 8,1855 in the Hawk Family Cemetery. Gathering Roots had posted his memorial but this rock is located in the Simon P Idleman Cemetery; which I believe probably was the Hawk Cemetery years ago. I'm going to ask her to move the memorial to this cemetery and if you'd like to post the photo that would be great. Yours turned out much better than mine did. Thanks, Diane Flanagan

RE: Wm. Stingley's birth
Excuse me, my mistake, I don't know what I was thinking. You have it all down perfectly. I appreciate all you've done!

Anna Elizabeth Bussard Stingley
Mark, hope you are well. We have corresponded in the past and you provided the Source material as well as a few books on the Stingley and Marquess families. However, I noticed that you have given Anna a birth date of 1725. Have you found new material that cancels the John Oberholtzer as her first husband? Does the marriage certificate for Johaness Stingley not have her maiden name as Oberholtzer? This was mentioned by Beth who has also been in contact with you.

Records are Wonderful
I appreciate all the hard work, efforts and research you have made available to all of us. I do regret that others have snatched up your work and have failed to give credit where credit was due.
Thanks for sharing,

RE: Charity Roby parentage
Benjamin Roby's oath is in Charles County Maryland. The LDS church has posted 2 million documents from Maryland on there website. Go to, Catalog, Charles Maryland, probate records. Select Charles county. Be sure to use the index to find the page you need. Ralph Shaw's will is there. There is a deed in Hampshire county for William Stingley to Benjamin Roby in 1834, I believe this is a nephew of Charity. I also believe that the Lydia Shaw listed in Ralph Shaw will married a brother of Benjamin Roby but I have not found that connection yet. I will let you know if I find any new documents.

Charity Roby parentage
I found some documentation you may or may not have for Charity Roby.
1.Polly Marquis Obit 9 Apr 1891 says Charity's mothers maiden name was Shaw.
2. William Stingley and Charity's first child born was Elizabeth. Born 1788 Hampshire county records. This usually indicated that Charity's mothers name was Elizabeth.
3. Ralph Shaw will of 1768 list two daughters Elizabeth Roby and Lydia Roby. William & Charity named a daughter Lydia.
4. In 1788 Benjamin Roby signed an Oath of Allegiance as a son of Richard Roby. Richard Roby will, 1801 is witnessed by Benjamin & Elizabeth Roby.

This is all the documentation I could find on this line. Hope this helps.

J Thomas Hawk
Hawk genealogy
Hi Mark,
You probably don't remember me, but we exchanged emails about 15 years ago.
My wife and and I are going to travel to Richmond, Va next week 10/12 thru 10/17 to go to the Library of Virginia.

I have recently come across some new information that might relate to the "George Hawk" that appears in your book "Return to Greenland" Volume one, page 21.

I would really like to talk to you about genealogy. I would gladly drive from Richmond to your location. Perhaps the three of us could have lunch. I am seeking advice. If lunch isn't possible a phone conversation would be great. I'm not a great writer, but email communication could work too.

I would really appreciate hearing from you.

My contact information follows.

James Lyon
Reading the research that James Lyon had two brothers John & Thomas. The only Thomas Lyon I find with a similar birth year is a Thomas b. 1765 son of William d. 1803 Culpeper Va. Could this be the father of James?
