Bio Photo Remember when this was a fun, positive experience? I do. Sunken graves and rattle- snakes!!! Those were the days.

You are welcome to use my photographs; however, I cannot claim copyright for most of the family photos. Whoever has the negatives owns the copyright.

Now that FindAGrave has "shared" its data with Ancestry you may find my images already posted there. All I ask is to check first. Copying here and pasting there will produce duplicates at Ancestry.

20 Feb 2016

Here I go again aimed at people 800 miles away whose purpose in life is to wake up early and read obituaries from towns they once lived in:

Obituaries are not a primary source of information. They are considered 3rd party sources. Many times the obituary is published before a relative is buried. You can assume that the newspaper has the facts, but without seeing the grave you do not know for sure if that person is actually buried in a given cemetery. Errors are made and facts can change before the actual burials. For example a cremation is substituted; the newspaper has already published the obituary.

I concede that 100 year old obituaries aid in finding relatives, but the author or newspaper owns the copyright.

Years ago FindaGrave insisted that obituaries were not allowed to be posted to their site either as a scanned image or a transcribed, copy-n-paste version. The “rules” now are “spelled out”:

Rule as of Dec 20, 2016:
"Can I add a memorial from a newspaper obituary or other 3rd party source?"

"Find A Grave does not discourage the legitimate indexing of the deceased through obituaries or other 3rd party accounts. Newspapers represent a very good source of information as a public record.

What we ask is that those who index and memorialize the deceased from newspapers and other 3rd party accounts do so with full respect of:

1. Copyright
2. Refrain from adding information about living people
3. Respond generously to the family of the deceased.

When adding an obituary you must obtain permission from the copyright holder. You should also cite the source and date. If anyone related to the deceased feel unsatisfied with Find A Grave or the memorial manager, we ask that they contact us at for satisfactory resolution."

RE: Edd Vantreese
Yes, I will. Are you related to Edd? I'm sorry that I did not understand earlier.

By the way, do you have any relatives that lived in Texas, either around Dallas or down near Beaumont I think? I've been researching a Green family and for some reason, the names you have mentioned have rung a bell with me. It may not be with my family tree but from Find a Grave.

Edd Vantreese
I'm not real clear on what you would like me to do concerning Edd Vantreese's memorial # 73108168.

Are you saying that the lady who is on the actual tombstone with him, is not his wife? If so, then who is she?

I can delete the spouse link, but I can't control what the photographs show. Please let me know how I can help. Thank you, Staci

Green family photos
Just letting you know that I added some photos that I had scanned from my grandmother's collection for James, Charles, and Curtis Green. Since you maintain these memorials, I wanted to give you notice so that you can re-arrange the photos in the order that you see fit for each memorial. :)

RE: Jewell Groff
Hi William!
I came across Jewell some time back while researching a similar name in our tree, but turns out she is not one of our kin, but I hate finding information no one else has and discarding it. To answer your question, no I don't need the transfer but do need the obit added so it it there 10 years from now when some grandchildren are searching for her.
Thanks for your great work and dedication.

Adelbert Thorne
My GGrandmother, Alice Thorne McInernay, was Adelbert Thorne's second sister. A year or two ago I went to Fiddletown Cemetery looking for Adelbert's gravesite and could not find his marker anywhere.
A few months ago, a photo of a new headstone appeared on Ancestry. Do you know WHO had it erected, WHEN, and how they figured out WHERE it should be placed? I understand that Adelbert's previous marker was wooden and probably burned when the cemetery was cleaned up.
Thanks for any information.

RE: Taylor Ham
William -

I should offer an apology to you - my relative having murdered your relative! But looking over your family tree in Ancestry, it appears you are related to both Welch and Taylor Ham?

I am making a trip to Texas at the end of October, kind of a Texas cemetery tour. I will be looking for graves of Hams, Wares and Jacksons, including visiting the Dew Cemetery.

RE: Taylor Ham
Yes, indeed. I have read the contemporary reporting on the tale they call "The Dead Woman's Crossing". This occurred while Taylor was in prison for the William H. Welch killing. Hard times for all. I hope the children made it thru OK. Taylor Ham was my great-uncle.

RE: Mary Ozella Compton Bray
Ozella's maiden name was unknown to me until you sent the E Mail. She was married to an Unknown Vaughn before she married Alva and had at least one son by the name of James E. Vaughn.

I gave up looking for her a couple of years ago. I knew she was buried south of Dallas but I did not look that far south. I thank you very much for finding her.

Happy to make edits. Please note I did not make original memorial, but am now maintaining. If you have additional links to the children, let me know; and any other edits. Thanks. ab
